I have used this method for many, many years.

I rinse the beans first.
Put them in a pot and cover with plenty of water.
Drain after about four hours.
Repeat soaking and draining.

The whole thing can be left out on the counter overnight.

What time is dinner?
I don't want to be late!

covered on your worktop is ok

12 hours

In the fridge, you avoid any bacteria build up.

My mom always soaked them overnight and just had them on the counter in a covered pot.

On the counter is fine. Any bacteria will be killed by the boiling or the baking If by chance you have a pressure cooker you can have them done in an hour.

On the counter, 8 to 12 hours...

On the counter 8 hrs +

You can do a quick soak. I rinse and sort my beans pour them into a pot of water and boil for about 10-20 minute then I let them soak for about 1 1/2 hour. But if you have to work tomorrow then you wont have time to do that so you could just put them in a pot of water sit them on your counter and let them soak all night

On the counter and covered is fine.

Sorry, thats a question for my mother-in-law. I think that I have only soaked beans once......
