How do you make the perfect rice krispies treats?!

Question: okay so i've followed the directions on the box every single time and they never turn out good. I measure the cereal exactly, and count the exact amount of marshmallows. It always seems to come out too hard, like hard as a rock. One time the rice krispie treats were soft, and they werent even crunchy. What am i doing wrong? am i not supposed to pour the cereal in immediately into the melted marshmallows? Do i have to let it cool a little and then mix it in? Do i need to add more butter or something? help!

I follow the directions on the box to, i was told to put the heat on low so the marshmallows don't burn and that way also they melt slow. Once they melted i take the pot of the hot plate and add the rice krispies and give them a good stir. I don't let it cool down once i move the pot of the stove, after i mix them well i put them in to my pan. And after a short while i stick them in the fridge, hubby likes it when i put them in the fridge. He always says they taste great, i don't know if they do. He eats them all up, before i get a chance to try them......lol

Stir the marshmallows as they melt, just a light stir. Don't add more butter then what it calls for, and don't forget to rub butter around the side of your pan.

I add about 3/4 of a cup of peanut butter and 6 ounces of chocolate chips to my rice crispy bars and I just double the recipe on the box. It makes two large pans and I always make sure to use fresh marshmallows. I use the microwave to melt my marshmallows and butter together slowly.

6 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispys. 3 tablespoons of margarine or butter (no-diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine) use "stick" butter or margarine. 1 package (10 oz. about 40) regular marshmallows or 4 cups minature marshmallows or 1 jar (7oz) marshmallow cream. Directions: 1. Melt margarine in large saucepan over low heat. Add marshmallows or cream stirring constantly until melted. Remove from heat. 2. Add 6 cups of Kelloggs Rice Krispys and stir until well coated. 3. Using a buttered spatula or waxed paper, press mixture evenly into a 13x9x2 inch pan coated with cooking spray (i prefer to lightly coat the pan with butter or margarine). Let cool and cut into squares. For best results use fresh marshmallows or cream and use Kelloggs cereal. They should be eaten within 1 or 2 days.
