If you use an icing with dairy products in it, it may not keep as long as you'd need it to do. You can make an icing from confectioners' sugar and water, with a little vegetable shortening in it, that should keep just fine.

No. I've tried it - my ex- didn't like marzipan. It was a disaster. After that he agreed, to pick the marzipan off the cake/icing.
