Anyone else dismayed that charred meat is a carcinogen?!

Question: I've seen on the news these days that charred or burnt meat, like a well-done burger or whatever at a BBQ, can cause cancer!!! :( That seems really unfair because I like everything well-done and with a little black burnt in it. Does anyone else agree?

How dangerous is it for me to still eat burnt BBQ... say once a week?

It is a carcinogen, and according to the studies you would have to eat well burned meat every day for about 2+ years to actually qualify as a carcinogenic substance.

I am not worried, just cook your meat with indirect heat, that is heat up both sides of the grill, sear the meat, then turn off the gas or push the coals to the other side. You get the same nice taste without the burned meat.

Happy grilling.

The only carcinogen in charred or well done meat is from the smoke on the grill!! It is all carcinogenic if you really want to think about that because it has been exposed to the smoke!

I do not think this is any more dangerous than sitting in front of color TV, Microwave oven, or even getting some sunshine on your skin.

Eat your burnt BBQ every day and twice on Sunday! It won't hurt you any more than getting out and riding your bike around the park.

Yes it worries me. I agree that it seems unfair because I am also worried about eating meat that is under-cooked. I try not to eat charred or black pieces so we have been putting foil onto our grill before cooking to reduce this.

I'm not dismayed because these days it seems that EVERYTHING is carcinogenic. Go ahead and eat, just don't pig out.

Everything causes cancer...air, water, medicine, food.
I'm not giving up my BBQ burnt ends!!

Using your oil to fry meat too many times causes carcinogens too. Oh well.
