Is it ok to use 1 tsp MSG in a recipe?!

Question: If not, is there a substitute? Is it really necessary? I'm trying a new recipe for a party.....haven't purchased the MSG yet

It is OK generally - MSG is NOT toxic and does NOT cause cancer and makes food taste a lot better. It does contain sodium, but the percentage by weight is a whole lot less than regular table salt. Certain people (very very few) are allergic to MSG (my Dad's heart would go into atrial fibrillation if he ate MSG) and can have a real problem, so you have to aware of this before you serve a dish with MSG to friends etc. For a party, you can probably do without it in the dish rather that risk an allergic reaction in one of the party goers

msg doesn't do anything but enhance the flavor of the food. it's not a preservative. it's addictive and it causes cancer... DO NOT USE MSG

I've been told that MSG is not good for you. Any recipes that I have that call for MSG, I just omit it and they taste great. I don't think it is really a necessary ingredient.
Happy cooking.

Leave it out.

I haven't seen any compelling evidence that it causes cancer.

But (a) it isn't good for anyone on a low-sodium diet, and (b) some people have an adverse reaction to it.

So skip it.

I am highly allergic to MSG, I really feel like I am going to die when I eat something with this in it. Please don't use it, I have been cooking for a very long time and I have never needed it in any recipe. I really do have to be careful where I eat out because of MSG.

No. It is toxic.

Recipe for those is 11oz almonds, 1c plus 3T sugar, 1/2 t >vanilla, 4 egg whites, pinch of ... 1 tsp "good spice", ie a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, etc ...

Is the recipe calling for MSG? I would omit it! it's only to boost the taste a bit. Your food will taste just is good with out it !

MSG has no domain in quality cooking.
