Pomme Frittes - French Fries with Mayo?!

Question: When I was very small, we used to eat at Shoney's every Sunday. There was a German waitress there who got me hooked for life on dipping my fries in mayonnaise rather than ketchup. She said in Germany that this was called "Pomme Frittes."

Is that truly what Pomme Frittes is, or is it just French Fries? Is it the mayo that makes it "Pomme Frittes?"

Pomme Frites simply means "french fries." Where here in the US, we use ketchup...in Europe they usually dip them in mayo.

If you are ever in NY, there is a place called Pommes Frites in NYC--all they serve are french fries and you can choose from tons of different sauces...no plain fries and ketchup at this place.

I actually found their website!

  • "Pomme Frittes" means ... fried potatoes. Dipping them in mayo is very European though, and one of the only ways I'll eat them. The only other way I like them is with vinegar (or with British Salad Dressing). The best pomme frittes I ever had were in Holland. YUM-MY!

Pommes frites is actually just french fries. Pomme is French for potato and frite refers to fried (with the "s" on the end because it is plural). The German waitress may just have learned the term pommes frites and thought that it applied to the way the french fries were eaten.

I have a lot of European friends and they all dip their fries in mayo! I don't like mayo at all on anything so I never picked up the habit, but I guess it must be a good thing!

Pomme Frittes is just another translation for french fries. I know that it is common for Europeans to eat their fries with mayonnaise and not ketchup like here in the States.

It is also a east coast thing in the United States.

Cuase i am french i can tell frittes truly is french fries in france
you can buy them in tesco ind fry it and put mayyonaise on top.

I had them with malt vinegar Heinz salad cream when I was visiting in England. Was definitely different!
