I, too,am allergic to onions. It's hard to replace onion with anything, so I agree with the first poster - leave it out. I can tolerate small amounts of onion powder, and very small amounts of garlic, but dried onion (like onion dip), shallots, leeks, scallions and a lot of garlic make me sick. Do you know his tolerance level? Maybe you could use onion powder too.

Edited to add: I see someone mentioned chives. I've only had these in small amounts (sprinkled on things like baked potatoes), but didn't seem to have a reaction. I think that's a good substitute, but I'd find out from your boyfriend how bad his allergy is first.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions on substitutions for specific recipes. It's unbelievable how many foods have onions in them that most people don't even realize. I have a vast recipe collection, and am even thinking of putting out a no-onion cookbook.

Just leave it out

chives work fine

Try leeks. They also have a nice oniony flavor, but they are in the same family, so check it out with him first. Also, make sure that you clean them really well, they tend to be sandy. Another thing would be scallions. I always add them last in the dish right before I am going to serve it. If he is allergic to these you can just sprinkle them in your portion.

I would just leave it out, or add a little garlic if you want that biting flavor.

Garlic can be used instead, but moderation is important.

Cook his 1/2 in another pot and make yours regular...that way he doesn't get onions and you can still have the flavors you love. I know it's rough, but hubby doesn't like tomatoes so I've learned to cook it together until I have to add the tomatoes, then I pull his out and continue or finish his in the other pot.

Don't forget to use a separate spoon on his. (just a friendly reminder, cause I got caught...lol)

***How do you need allergic, does he have a physical reaction like itchy rash or do they cause stomach problems, my neighbor has stomach problems with any fresh onions , but not with the dried ones, so we hydrate those and use them when we need onions to make the dish turned out right some things just need onions.

garlic is a good substitute for onions....it tastes just as good too, if not better.

garlic.

try bell pepper, for a huge taste difference, or try water chestnuts for crunch but not much taste diff.

Is he allergic to the whole family, garlic, onions, scallions, leeks, shallots, nobody mentioned shallots?

I love garlic and scallions!

I use chives also when I don't have an onion in the house.

May I suggest peppers such as the green or red bell type. My husband of 17 yrs doesn't eat them i just often omit them entirely from recipes and find other recipes that doesn't include them..for future reference eating out is my highlight. I order allot of things with onions then.

if he is allergic, then he'll most likely have a reaction to the whole family.. onion, chive, leek, shallot
i would suggest garlic or radish for the "nip"
and bell pepper or celery for the crunch
