What is the deal with beans on toast?!

Question: Is this just a British thing? I've never had it, or had any desire to have it. I mean, I like beans. I like toast. I can imagine what they would taste like together, and it would probably be okay, but not spectacular. I'd rather eat jam on toast. Or peanut butter on toast. I've even been known to get all crazy and mix jam WITH peanut butter on toast! But BEANS on toast? Convince me I should eat it.......

It's a comfort food for most people in the UK. Kids like it and it's a fast, easy and inexpensive snack or a small meal. Lots of people have fond memories of coming home from primary school on a cold day and being given this as a quick 'warm-up'.

It's great when you come home from a long day at work and haven't got the energy to make a 'proper' meal. It's best with some grated cheese and a dash of Worcester sauce.

For real traditionalists, the toast should be buttered before putting the beans on top. I think it probably became a staple in the UK during the long years of rationing after the war. And yes, it should always be made with Heinz baked beans.

For many people in the UK it's the only way they eat beans!

I have never heard of that...but I agree with you. Separately they are both good, but together, I don't think so.
I'll stick with eating beans in a burrito and jam on toast.

It's a British thing. And I would rather have crackers in beans.

go on... give it a try, bit of cheddar cheese sprinkled over it too...

Oh it's so good for lunch or a light dinner, it has to be Heinz baked beans in tomato sauce though, it's perfect.

i think that is weird. thats my opinion so i can't conveince you to eat them.

in our house we call it skinheads on a raft!. Its a great quick meal and even better with melted cheese on top. Try it.

you have to have our bread and our baked beans to get it right - but give it a try its great - you can add to it with a fried egg on top or grated cheese plus its lovely with brown sauce or similar

I have never eaten beans on toast and had no idea it was a common thing. I would try it though, I ate a sweet cricket in a sushi restaurant last week so I don't think beans on toast is that outlandish or should require very much convincing to try it. It's not like it takes 6 hours to prepare and would be a waste if you didn't like it. It probably takes 6 minutes so just eat it. Maybe you will be a beans on toast addict and then we will have to convince you NOT to eat it.

It's a north of England thing.
I guess they had little to eat during WWII
just a guess

I like beans with buttered bread but I'm just a yankee.

When I visited London, I had my first English Breakfast, with stewed tomato's, beans (tasted like Pork and Beans) toast, bacon (tasted way different than our bacon, but good) and eggs. I couldn't get past the beans, but everything else was good. It was a hearty meal and it lasted for hours. I think it is very cultural, so if you grew up with it, it would be great.

That's ridiculous it belongs to the UK

Point taken...but now that you mention it, I think I might like to try some! This actually sounds like a pretty good deal; think about eating a hamburger or BBQ sandwich, and the bun got soaked in bean juice. Not a bad flavor, right? Now think about using toasted bread, so it provides more support for the beans and doesn't immediately turn into mush. I may give it a shot tonight, actually.

Its very popular over here, personally I hate baked beans.

Try it. You just might like it. I have with cheese, but I'll try anything at least once.

They are baked beans in a tomato sauce by Heinz. They come already canned and taste great with some proper English Cheddar grated on the top, maybe a dash of Woucester sauce on top.............Lea and Perrins.
Go to a supermarket that has an English section and just get a tin and try it, then you'll understand..............it's a staple part of British breakfast, dinner and supper........do not know too many people who eat it for lunch..........the bread absorbs the tomato sauce and it is just amazing...........that is all i can say. Just try it..............you cannot knock it until you have.
