Do you own a brown sugar softener?!
Also, related to brown sugar; can I mix in light brown sugar and dark brown sugar together, or should they be kept separate?
Answers: I bought one the other day and it worked so well. It softened my brown sugar right away. But, I noticed that some of the brown sugar turned white.. is that normal?
Also, related to brown sugar; can I mix in light brown sugar and dark brown sugar together, or should they be kept separate?
yes I will tell you why
Brown sugar is granulated sugar and molasses. What happens when you put the brown sugar softener in there it some how makes the molasses settle in the sugar. Mix it it will be fine.
Been there done that
oh and yes the dark just contains more molasses
nope.
No, I've never even heard of one! I do know that it helps if I keep my brown sugar inside of the bag in my container.
I mix light brown and dark brown all the time, and I constantly interchange them in recipes. I do not pay attention to what kind I'm using, and honestly, the only difference I find is in the color!
Well, dark and light brown sugars have different flavors so you should not mix them.
I'm not sure why brown sugar would turn white with your brown sugar softener...I wonder if there is something coming off of the softener?
Yes I have a brown sugar softener, it is amazing isn't it! I do believe it is normal for some of the sugar to turn white.
As for mixing them, you could if you really needed the space- however some recipes are more specific on which type of brown sugar to use (light vs dark) so basically it is just up to you. It wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't make a habit out of it.
Good luck!
I love brown sugar softeners! But I've never seen the sugar turn white.. where do you live? The weather or humidity could have something to do with it.. we always lived in very dry places.
And I'm not too sure about the different brown sugars, either. They both have distinct tastes and usually I use them to bake different things, so I'm guessing that it's better to keep them seperate. But it shouldn't hurt if you want to mix them!
Happy baking! =)
I do not have a brown sugar softener, I use a slice of apple if I need to soften some, but I keep it sealed tightly so it stays very soft.
Light brown sugar has less molasses in it than dark brown sugar...hence the color difference. This is why you should keep them separate.
Yes, I do own a brown sugar softer............it's my microwave......lol. I store my brown sugar (dark and light) separate in freezer zip lock bags in the freezer. I use the microwave to soft it. Light sugar has less molasses than dark brown sugar. Yes,keep it separate. Sorry,I did not waste money on that item.
Finally, a gadget, I don't have! Ive never heard of one, I just put my sugar in the microwave on low. You can mix the 2 sugars, but they do have different taste and color, so its your call.
I have a softener for my sugar and it's great.
The only difference between dark and light brown sugar is the amount of molasses added into the sugar. The taste is only subtly different. try a little mix and see how you like it.
I have a brown sugar softener but I don't use it because I keep my brown sugar in a Tupperware container. Your brown sugar probably changed color because you bought a cheap sugar.
I found out you can soften brown sugar in the microwave.. so you really don't need to buy anything special anymore. I used to get it in the Miles Kimball catalog.
I have mixed them together the only difference is your sugar goes a medium color.. not light nor dark.. and a touch of molasses flavor from the dark brown sugar.
I keep my brown sugar soft by putting a piece of bread in the container on top of the sugar. Works great. I just use the "heal" of the bread no one eats that anyway at my house. So I have spent no extra money. My preference is not to mix the light with the dark.
wow! for those of you thinking about buying one, save your money!! and just stick a piece of squeezed bread in with the brown sugar it keeps it soft along time!
No , If its white it's old,Dont mix,I keep mine in two zip lock bags inside each other .Sugar in the inner bag and a damp paper towel between the two . both sealed tight.
I've never heard of such a thing! How exactly does it soften the sugar?
I normally buy the brown sugar in the resealable bags. Otherwise, I store it in a ziploc bag and squeeze all the air out.
As for mixing them--I've never noticed any real difference if you make a recipe that calls for light brown, but you substitute dark brown in its place. I do know that dark brown sugar has more molasses in it, so it'll make cookies chewier.
no i don't need one i always used my microwave. , sometimes that happen if.the sugar is old or stail , i won't mix light and dark brown sugar together because the dark brown sugar is to o sweet and have molasses and they are for cookies brownies candies all kinds and some sweet pies, like ( pecan, sweet-potatoes-pie, and pumpkin pie)
