HOMEMADE PLAITED BREAD

1/3 c. sugar
2 dry yeast cakes
1/3 c. shortening
2 sticks melted butter
2 tbsp. salt
2 1/2 c. warm water
2 eggs, beaten
Flour

Combine sugar, salt, yeast cakes and warm water. Set aside for 10 minutes. Add shortening and eggs. Add flour by the cup until dough is mixed enough to handle; about 5-7 cups. Place in greased mixing bowl and let rise until double in size. Pour dough on floured board and roll to 1 inch thickness. Cut 3 equal strips.
Start at top of bread and plait. Tuck ends under and pinch. Place on large greased bread sheet and let rise about 30-40 minutes. Brush bread before you place in oven with melted butter, and brush as it bakes until all butter is used. If you want to make Poppy Seed or Italian bread, just beat 2 egg whites and brush over bread and sprinkle seeds on loaf. Excellent recipe.

Really simple and no fat.

French Bread

I make it in my bread machine.

Whole Wheat No Knead Bread

3 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 packages yeast
2 cups warm water
2 Tbsp. molasses or honey
1 tsp. salt

Measure out the whole wheat flour into large oven proof bowl. Place in warm oven, both the flour and the bowl should be warm when you make the bread. (a gas oven with a pilot light or an electric oven set as low as possible).

Since I have a gas oven with a pilot light, I left it sit for 1 hour.

Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water, blend in molasses. Let sit 5 minutes. Add another 1/2 cup water. Combine the flour, yeast mixture and salt. Add the rest of the water. The dough will be wet and sticky.

Put directly in a buttered loaf pan. Cover and sit in warm spot, allow to rise by one third. This took about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees and bake for 35 to 45 minutes.

Go to Allrecipes.com and type English Muffin Bread in the search box. It's very easy and it tastes great.
