Not only can you, but you should. Fondant, in fact, is decorative but tastes terrible. The finest wedding cakes are often wrapped in marzipan or even white chocolate (the best) which can be formed similarly, though requires more skill. Fondant is edible, but only just. I never touch the stuff. Marzipan is fairly potent, so make sure the flavor marries with the cake you're making. If not, consider a white chocolate covering - there are plenty of recipes out there for white chocolate which is malleable and sets well.

Cheers!

yes u should.tastes better too. an i agree with the other comment..white chocolate frosting is delicious.

The main reason that fondant is used because it is cheaper. It also is easier to color and does not dry out as easy as marzipan...

you can use marzipan to cover a cake , but fondant is better. the marzipan is more poris and therefore more air will be absorbed and will dryout and be come crusty, and will also absorb taste out of the air. if you really want to enjoy the taste add it to the cake batter or cover the cake in marzipan, and then ganuch the whole cake with choclate. yummy!
