It does have alot of salt and it depends on who you talk to one friend says eating meat will not make you gain weight. Another friend told me that salt for me is good because I have really bad anemia. So it goes more to your life style and health. If your health and are fit a small amount of jerk once a week should not bother you. (Dont be like me and eat the whole bag in one day..lol try to spread it out even though it taste so good. )

Lots of sodium

it is full of salt (sodium) but it has no fat in it and not too many calories..

It is if it's low in sodium.
Just make sure it is REAL beef jerky made from strips of beef, not meat by products that have been squished and molded to look like real beef jerky.
Great source of protein and it keeps for a long time.

YES IT IS..loaded with protein, fiber and other nutrients....also high in sodium which is the only bad thing....MESSING WITH SASQUATCH

WHEN WE GO hiking in the mountains, we carry a ton of beef jerky's. it is a great source of energy and easy to pack. visit restaurants buc-ee's on the net and place an order. they are home made but watch out, at $27/pound.... yep they are that good!!

Beef jerky is often low in fat and can be made from a lot of different meats, but in reality most packaged jerky contains a lot of chemicals, including MSG and tons of other salts.

There is almost no dietary fiber in it either, so try to add something with fiber, like fruit or veggie to help the protein "stick" or stay with you for a lot longer, helping you feel more full from less snack.

common ingredients in homemade:
flank steak, soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, red pepper, sesame oil, worcestershire sauce, onion powder, liquid smoke.

Another problem is that it might take more jerky to satisfy you than if you balanced it with something else, but with its low fat and high protein content it's a great idea in theory. Read the packages though because there's a big difference between beef jerkey and "snack meat product" like slim Jims:

Slim Jim ingredients: beef, mechanically separated chicken, water, salt, corn syrup, dextrose, **flavorings**, spice, paprika, hydrolyzed corn gluten, soy and wheat gluten, proteins, sodium nitrite, lactic acid starter culture.

well....i love beef jerky too. maybe it has lots of calorie, but you use your jaw alot when you eat it. so eating beef jerky may help to develop a healthy jaw

Me too! I'm beef jerky city! Beef jerky is packed full of mighty goodness, and gives you all the vitamins and minerals you need to live a happy and vital life while enjoying the benefits that only a meaty snack can deliver (see your doctor if pain persists).

yes very healthy, all the fat is cooked out.so your left with the good stuff.

Its healthy if your looking for Protien and no Carbs... but its SO VERY bad for you if your talking about soidum. You can make it at home if you want, and the brine you soak it in before hand can have as little salt as you wish, but if your buying it you can belive that you would get less sodium licking a salt block.
