Might be one of these:

Hamburger Potato Casserole - 6 servings

1 pound lean ground beef
3 cups peeled and thinly sliced potatoes
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup chopped onion or 1/2 pkg of dried onion soup mix
3/4 cup milk
salt to taste
freshly ground pepper, to taste
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef; drain fat.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, onion, milk, salt and pepper to taste.

Alternately layer the potatoes, soup mixture and meat in a 11x7 inch (2 quart) baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until potatoes are tender. Top with Cheddar cheese, and continue baking until cheese is melted.

Scalloped Potatoes and Hamburger - 6 Servings

1 pound ground beef
6 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced
1 large onion, sliced
salt and pepper to taste
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1 cup milk
1/4 cup chopped green pepper

In a skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. In a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish, layer half of the potatoes, onion and beef; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Repeat layers. In a bowl, combine the soup, milk and green pepper; mix well. Pour over top. Cover and bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes. Uncover; bake 15 minutes longer or until potatoes are tender.

Good luck.

Don't know what it's called but it sounds like a casserole to me.
Pat the ground beef into a baking dish
Put the potatoes on top of it
Mix the cream of mushroom soup and milk and put on top of that
bake it for an hour at 350 degrees.

Hamburger and Potato Bake

4-6 potatoes
1 sm. onion, sliced
1 lb. hamburger
2 beef bouillon cubes
1 1/4 c. boiling water
butter, salt
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 sm. can evaporated milk
Sm. box Velveeta cheese

Slice and cook potatoes with some butter, onion and salt to taste. Fry hamburger until brown. Dissolve beef cubes in water and pour over hamburger. Let cook a few minutes until liquid evaporates.
In a saucepan add evaporated milk to soup and heat. Add cheese cut in chunks, and stir until melted.

Drain water off of potatoes. In a 2 quart casserole dish place alternating layers of potatoes, hamburger and soup mixture. Keep making layers until all is used up. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

hope this helps. enjoy.

Brown the ground beef in a skillet with some chopped onions, salt and pepper. When it is fully cooked add the can of creme of mushroom soup and a half can of water or milk and mix well. This makes the gravy. Then open the can of sliced potatoes and drain before putting on top of the hamburger gravy. Place the cover on the frying pan and let simmer for about ten minutes till real warm and you're done.

hamburger helper!!!

Sounds a lot like the hamburger helper meal called potato stroganoff. Maybe your wife made a version of it from scratch. Just season the ground beef to your taste-whatever your preferred seasonings are. or buy the package from the store and follow the instructions.
