My mushroom soup made me sick?!

Question: I simply boiled fresh store bought mushrooms, boiled until soft, broke them up with a potato masher, seasoned and thickened. This is the second time it happened. What am I doing wrong?

Do you feel ill after eating mushrooms in general or only when you prepare them this way? It could be what you are using to thicken them with, are you using cream? You may be lactose intolerant.

Could you possibly be allergic to mushrooms? That will do it.

I generally have that happen to me if I eat crab twice in one month. The second time I get sick. If I go a long time, then I don't.

Did you get the mushrooms from the same store both times? Try using canned mushrooms to see if you get the same reaction. You don't have to cook the mushrooms so long - and if using canned, just puree them in your blender since they are already cooked. With the fresh, saute in a little oil first, then cook them in the soup but only like 10 minutes or so and then puree.

I'd recommend you try with canned mushrooms first and if you don't get sick with those, then you don't have an allergy to mushrooms. It could be something else you season with if not the mushrooms. Try to identify what is giving you that reaction so you'll know for the future.

did you check the expiration date?
on the cream and the shrooms?

Well, could be a few things. . .

1. Maybe you have developed an allergy to the mushrooms.
2. Try using canned mushrooms, if you still encounter illness, then it could be an allergy.
3. Maybe it's the other ingredients you are using in making your soup.
4. Try cooking your mushrooms in either a glass pan, or a teflon coated pan ( this is a thought, as I have read something, somewhere about mushrooms -vs- uncoated aluminum pans)
5. Make sure all untisels are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed well in super hot water.

(Do you use well water, or have an atrisian well? If so, there may have been bacteria in the water.)

I can't tell you what you may or may not be doing wrong, the other answer about possible allergies definatly needs to be looked into, however i have another question for you.

How well do you wash and clean the mushrooms before making the soup? mushrooms need to be well rinsed and have the bottom cut edge removed before they are used in any recipie. The reasons behind this is because of the way mushrooms are grown which is usually from decaying matter-frequently animal dung. Failing to clean traces from the mushrooms before consuming can make you sick.

Better go to the store and tell them and they will give you new ones, you may safe a life, so go or call the store and see the manager, no one else.
