How do you substitute dried herbs for fresh in a recipe?!

Question: I think the ratio is 2:1, but I don't know if it's fresh to dried or dried to fresh.

Answers: I think the ratio is 2:1, but I don't know if it's fresh to dried or dried to fresh.

You have the right idea but with dried I tend to do a little less then that. For example...if my recipe called for a tablespoon of fresh thyme, and all I had was dry, I would likely use a teaspoon versus a 1/2 tbs.

Go with your tastebuds.

The rule of thumb is 3:1 - three times fresh as dried. So if it calls for a Tablespoon of fresh oregano, you would only use a teaspoon of dried. (dried is more concentrated, so you don't need as much of it as you do fresh)

I couldn't have said it any better myself! (First answer's good!) Because the herbs are dried, their flavor will not be as strong - hence the reason that you only need a little of the fresh stuff. Happy cooking!
