How to make an Owl Birthday Cake?!
...but was looking for something maybe a little simpler...thanks!
Answers: My daughter would like an owl-shaped birthday cake, I'm looking for some ideas to get the cake right. I like this idea here: http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/bi...

Make 3 circle cakes cut 1 in half, use a full 1 as the body, 1 as a head and then 1 half with the flat side against the body either side of the body for wings. Use chocolate sticks for feet and ice! Enjoy!!

if you are planning to bake the cake yourself, you can either bake it in an owl shaped cake pan, which i'm not sure is very common or even in existence, or you can bake a round cake and then cut out the shape of an owl with a knife, although it might look kind of cheesy if the cake crumbles a little
i have no idea how you will be able to make a standing up one from that website, but good luck anyway
I would go top your local bakery and see if they have or can make an edible topper .After you get that bake a flat cake place the topper on it and cut around it you can use some icing to bring out eyes and feathers
Try www.cakecentral.com
ok here is what i would do...
first, look for an owl shaped cake pan...if there is one its probably made by Wilton...so maybe search for that on Ebay...if there is a Wilton owl cake pan, it may be retired (no longer made) so it may be expensive...otherwise it will prolly cost about $12....so if you get the cake pan there SHOULD be directions with it on how to decorate it...otherwise you could try to do a "flat" version of the photo that you included with the link....using the almonds and such as feathers (which is a really neat idea, but beware of people who may be allergic to nuts...)
Now, if there isn't a owl cake pan, and since you want a simpler cake.....i would do just an owl head....depending on how many people will be there i would go with a 10" round cake pan, do however many layers you want and then decorate it to look like an owl...maybe still using the almond slices as feathers. Or to get the look of feathers, maybe try using a leaf tip and then decorate it with that...
Or if you really want a full body owl...then make a 1/2 sheet cake, get a picture of an owl(possibly from a online coloring book) blow the picture up really big (to fit the 1/2 sheet cake) then cut the picture of the owl out, lay it on the cake and then just cut the cake to the shape of the outline of the owl. Then if you want to you can do a FBCT(frozen buttercream transfer) Take the picture you used to carve out the shape of the owl...flip it over (so its facing the cardboard), then tape it to like a peice of cardboard, then tape PARCHMENT paper over top of it...(you should be able to see the picture of the owl through the parchment paper) then basically color it in with the desired frosting colors...just like you are coloring a page from a coloring book, but with frosting....once you have the image of the owl done, you put it in the fridge for a couple days...then once you are ready to do the cake take the FBCT out of the fridge and immediatly put it on the cake (lining it up....now do u know why i said flip it over to face the cardbaord)and taaadaa...frost the sides and done (you can see how to do a FBCT at cakecentral.com...)
If you do a flat patterned owl cake from a cake pan, or even just the head from a 10" round pan it will be so much easier and less stressful were you to do the cake that the link takes you to....3D cakes are much more....everything...more time, more patience, more frosting...you have to dowel it most likely....if you have to travel...most likely the cake will tip over....
HTH.....
