Question: I have a recipie that calls for lemon zest.. someone told me just use lemon peel and shave it into shavings... but that can't be the same thing?? Can it??

lemon zest is the shavings off of lemon peel.
but they do sell it in stores. It would be in the spice isle and its called "lemon peel". It's the same thing.

it's the yellow part of the outside of a lemon. You find it on a lemon. Grate it with a nutmeg grater and don't get the white part...it's bitter

the outter layer of a lemon . remove it with zester or veggie pealer don't use the white pith

Just take a fine grater and rub a fresh lemon peel on it trust me it is way better and cheaper then buying dried lemon zest

It is from the peel. Invest in a zestier. You can use it for oranges, whole nutmeg, Parmesan cheese.

You don't have to buy it .you just peel a lemon very thinnley ,or you can buy a lemon zester from any leading department store

Lemon zest is the same as lemon peels. It's the yellow part before you get to the white part. The very outside of the lemon. You won't be able to buy it anywhere.

It pretty much is the rind. It is the outermost layer, the yellow, that is shaved with a lemon zester.

This will explain it much better than I ever could...

Yes, Lemon Zest is the skin of the lemon peel. You use a cheese grater for this, and you can freeze it. If a store clerk can't give you an answer, it's because there work is not in the kitchen. I suppose you can buy frozen zest, perhaps in specialty stores.

Your first answer wass close.....Take a firm whole lemon, making sure it is clean. Using the fine side of a grater, rub the lemon firmly to remove the peel, but not the juice. This is not usually very difficult because most recipes call for a reasonably small almount of zest... which contains the oil of the citrus and adds a richer lemon flavor...
Good Luck...

yes that is right shave the lemon peel
