Thanksgiving Question?!
Question is, I need a new dish that I can start making from now on...ie green bean casserole, corn casserole etc. Something original and not TOO time consuming or difficult, but something that will be a big hit.
Answers: I'm 25 and have FINALLY been allowed to bring something to Thanksgiving and Christmas this year (I'm a great cook, but always am in charge of rolls or ice)

How about:
Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake
For the cake:
1 18.25-ounce box yellow cake mix
1 egg
1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter
For the filling:
1 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
1 15 ounce can pumpkin
3 eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 16-ounce box confectioner' sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter
Mix together the cake ingredients and press into the bottom of a 9x13 inch pan.
With a mixer, combine the filling ingredient together until smooth and pour on top of the cake mixture. Bake at 350o for 40 minutes. Should be a little jiggly when you remove it from the oven.
Serve with whipped cream and enjoy.

Check it out, it tastes great and is not the traditional pumpkin pie recipe.
My favorite to take to Thanksgiving dinner is Pecan Pie. Pies are inexpensive, plus everyone enjoys pie.

Have a ham or some meat that your whole family like to eat that is thanksgiving
Chili Cornbread Salad. It's a recipe from Taste of Home. Great recipe, I never have any left over.
A cranberry / orange relish would be a nice new addition to your table. Try foodnetwork for recipe.

You're a great cook, what's your specialty?
What do you like to cook? What do you want to be known for?
We can all suggest different dishes, but do the one that shows you want to bring some love to the table!

The Ultimate Potato Gratin
Recipe courtesy Tyler Florence
1 head savoy cabbage, cored, cleaned, and shredded
1 (2-inch) piece slab bacon, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 bunch fresh chives, finely chopped to 1/4 cup
2 pounds baking potatoes, unpeeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch), see Cook's note*
2 1/2 cups heavy cream
2 cups grated Parmesan
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Finely shred the cabbage. Cut the bacon into 1/2-inch chunks. Place a small skillet over medium-low heat and fry the bacon, until crisp. Remove from pan with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Set aside.
Add 1 tablespoon butter to bacon fat in frying pan. When it has melted add 1/2 the garlic and give it a quick stir with a wooden spoon to soften. Add the cabbage and coat it with the butter. Slowly let it wilt. Add the bacon. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Remove from heat and add most of the chives, reserving a little for the garnish.
Generously butter the bottom and sides of a 9 by 13-inch ovenproof casserole dish. In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, 1 1/2 cups of cream, 1 cup of Parmesan, and the remaining garlic. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Using your hands, place a layer of potatoes in the casserole dish. Sprinkle with Parmesan and repeat with 2 more layers. Spoon the cabbage mixture on top and spread it out evenly over the potatoes. Top it off with 2 more layers of potato and Parmesan. Pour the remaining 1 cup cream over the dish. Sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan.
Cover dish with aluminum foil. Bake for 1 hour. Remove foil and bake for 30 minutes until golden brown. Leave for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh chives.
*Cook's Note: Slice the potatoes immediately before using so they don't turn brown.
How about a twist on the classic dessert? Instead of pumpkin pie try Pumpkin Eater Bars.

Also good with squash puree instead of pumpkin.

I am glad to hear the grown-ups are finally trusting you !!! I would make a savory custard with creamed corn and thyme ....and relish of cranberry and fresh orange ...a big unfrosted gingerbread (12 x 17, say ) or Williams Sonoma has a fresh ginger cake that might do
Martha Stewart has pomegranate punches, etc ... pretty !
HI - Spicy sweet potato pie is terrific, not too time consuming and perfect for Thankgiving. You boil 3 lbs of sweet potatoes until tender then peel and mash them with 4 T butter, 7 T of brown sugar, 1 c milk, and 1/4 t each of cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Put it in a greased casserole dish in a 400 degree oven for 30 mins. Yummy -
christy j, found this recipe on the web this year, and have all ready made it at least 6 times since fall started. this is a new twist on an old idea and i guarantee no one else will show up with this item and next year people say christy are making the pumpkin whoopie pies like you made last year. for the recipe and directions go to www.andreasrecipes. com . i am a retired baker and the recipe and the directions are easy to follow. i looked a several recipes but this was the best and easiest. i make them with size 20 scoop they suggest if you don't have one go to a restuant supply they are cheap and will last for ever. with the size 20 you can get 20 on a regular home sheet pan,and it takes 2 sheet pans, and the batter comes out even your baking time could vary some let them get just a little tan to the eye a bout 15 min.
the filling is easy to make and can be put on the cookies by hand ,scoop or pastry bag, i have done it all 3 ways. there is plenty of filling to go around, i start light and get heavier toward the end, the go back and put more on the ones at the begining. they are really yummy and easy please try them you won't be sorry! good luck bacondebaker !
