What is wrong with the microwave?!

Question: Sometimes it does this, sometimes it doesn't. But it does it enough so that it's going around that we are all going to have to pitch in to buy a new one. I can't afford that, and I can't go job searching right now so I hoping this can be fixed.

You put in a time and press start. The microwave works but then shuts off after about 8 or 10 seconds. It took 6 tries to get my oatmeal cooked this morning. What would cause a microwave to shut off after about 8 or 10 seconds repeatedly? But not always?

Sounds like an electrical short of some kind, if it shuts off sometimes and not always.

Sorry to have to tell you, but you probably need a new one. They're not THAT expensive... you can get a nice one without too many bells and whistles for about $80. Or go even more basic for $50.

I've been lucky enough to have had my current MW for 17 years. Yep, 17. It was a simple model and has served me well, but I expect it to give up the ghost without warning any day now.

Check Consumer Reports (the library will have copies you can look at) for their ratings.

they really aren't that expensive anymore. Just go get a new one.

hmm, sounds like it could be something in the timming mechanism or circuit board
im not an electrician or expert on microwaves, but that would be my guess.you would have to take it to someone that does repair work on them to truly find out what was going on with it..
Microwaves arent all that costly now a days -but i understand your financial issues..
try a local salvation army or thrift store they sometimes have them.
I bought mine at my local salvation army for $5 and have had it for 5 years, and it still works like a charm

put in your town and state...it will give you a list of freecycle groups in your area....a lot of them are right on Yahoo Groups. (You can even search Yahoo Groups directly for one in your area). One of the members might have a microwave they don't need and are willing to give you for free.

as said freecycle or craigslist
