my mom always had many over for thanksgiving so she always made way to much food :)
My family always makes the following and they have been traditions in our home for as long as I can remember.
Kings Arms Tavern Sweet Potatoes
3-pounds sweet potatoes
?-cup light brown sugar, packed divided
3-tablespoons butter
5 teaspoons cinnamon
?-teaspoon nutmeg
?-teaspoon salt
1-cup milk
Preheat oven to 400o
Grease 1? quart casserole
Cook sweet potatoes in boiling salted water until done; drain peel and mash them.
Stir in all the remaining ingredients except 2 tablespoons of sugar.
Turn the mixture in to prepared casserole and sprinkle with remaining sugar.
Bake at 400o for 30 minutes.
PUMPKIN can be substituted for the sweet potatoes and it comes out well.

Lime Jell-O Mold
1 large box Lime Jell-O
8 ounces Cream Cheese - room temperature
1 can Crushed Pineapple - chilled
1 16 ounce container of Cool Whip or fresh whipped cream
Drain pineapple saving liquid to use in Jell-O. Make Jell-O using the quick-set instructions replacing some of the cold water with the pineapple juice. Make sure gelatin is well dissolved. Place in fridge until semi-set. In a blender combine cream cheese and pineapple until well blended. Mix into semi-set Jell-O than fold in Cool Whip. Pour into a gelatin mold and refrigerate until set or over night. To serve, unmold onto a plate large enough for the mold.
Yams with melted marsh mellows on top and green bean casarole with toasted onions on top and pumpkin pie
Green Bean Casserole very easy, directions are on the can of Durekee fried onions (I add a touch of milk to mine)
Yams
Cranberry Sauce
Corn Pudding (Not a desert, just anothe way to make a corn dish, awesome !!)
Dinner Rolls of course
Stuffing, you can stuff the turkey and make panned stuffing so it comes out a little crunchy, just bake it in a pan.
Sweet Potatoe Pie
Pumpkin Pie, both served w/ Cool Whip
Salad, some people perfer this over the green beans.
I like baby spinach, fresh mozzarello cheese sliced about a quater inch thick, tomatoes, fresh uncooked asparagus, sliced almonds and red vinerette dressing.
Cook carrots, add a touch of sugar along with a few sprinkles of parsley and butter.
Jello mold
Good luck

Stuffed Pumpkin:
Take a look at the attached image, 1 and get an idea on the filling from 2.
There are many recipies for the filling.. and there are many types of pumpkins and or squash that you can do this with. Every time I take one of these to the table I get lots of "ooos & ahhhhs" and it's actually quite easy to prepare and make.
For fancy and elegant? I suggest popping over to http://www.foodnetwork.com and checking out their recipies, but I can tell you some things that have worked very well for us in the past.
1) Sweet potatoes. Bake 'em like regular potatoes and drizzle honey and butter inside. Or mash and bake them in a cassarole dish. Just don't go for the marshmallows, it's very tacky.
2) Asparagus. Grilled asparagus looks very fancy but takes almost no time. Sprinkle some shredded parmesan cheese on top and you're good to go!
3) Bread of some kind. If you're going with fancy and traditional, butterhorn rolls are great and Pillsbury makes some easy ones. Don't try a regular recipie, it takes a very long time. Parker rolls and regular dinner rolls are easy to buy, too, if that's your thing. If you don't mind trying something new, I might suggest a French baguette with different dipping sauces. Try oil and a heady balsamic vinegar or sliced bruschetta and swiss. Or a herbed cream cheese spread (try garlic and lemon, very tangy!).
4) Dessert. There's always pumpkin pie, and it IS traditional, but why not mix it up? Try an apple crisp or cobbler. They're easy to make and smell wonderful. Apples are fully in season, too, so they'll be easy to find cheap and delicious! Or try a shortcake with honey'd pears/apples. Top that off with some homemade whipped cream (easy for kids to make) or vanilla ice cream and you'll be in heaven!
Hope we gave you some neat ideas! (Now I'm off to salivate over my own Turkey Day dinner!)
Here's a good but easy to fix recipe:
"Fresh Broccoli Salad"
2 c. fresh Broccoli Flowettes
2c.Celery,sliced
1c.Raisins
1/2c. Sunflower Seeds OR sliced Almonds.
Dressing:
1c. Miracle Whip
2 TBsp. vinegar
1/3c. sugar
1. Cut broccoli into small bite-size pieces.
2.Combine Miracle Whip,vinegar & sugar,blend until smooth.
3.Add other ingredients & mix well.
4.Chill at least 4 hours.
Yippee! Your first Thanksgiving dinner! Here's what I normally do & all of these are super easy:
Turkey (rubbed with extra light olive oil & garlic; cooked in a cooking bag)
Pan dressing
Gravy
Green bean casserole
Sweet pototoes (with chopped pecans, brown sugar, & butter)
Corn
Cranberries or cranberry sauce
Parkerhouse rolls
Pecan and/or pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream
For drinks - iced tea and water with dinner, coffee with dessert
If you have enough space & pretty serving pieces, all of these dishes look great on the table. Or, you can go with a buffet style service so your guests have room enough to eat when seated at your table.
Keep your table decor simple so the meal can truly be the centerpiece.
Happy Thanksgiving!!! : )
Deviled eggs and a cheeseball with crackers or pretzels
Turkey and stuffing, Mashed potatoes and gravy, yams, cranberry sauce, creamed corn, green bean casserole, rolls and butter
Pumpkin pie, chocolate pie, some kind of little cookies (I am making mini cheesecakes)
I am making Cranberry Apple Sangria (recipe from Red Lobster website). We will also have several bottles of various wines, coffee, pop, etc.
