Have you ever made a turkey in a Nesco Roaster?!
Answers: And if so, does it turn out moist and browned, or do you have to add something so it gets browned?
Brown Your Turkey before roasting in your Nesco, the flavor is so much better that way!
Take the insert pan out of the Nesco and place the raw turkey in the insert pan, then melt some butter or margarine and brush it on the turkey before roasting, this helps your turkey get a gorgeous golden brown. I also sprinkle fresh rosemary and seasonings on my Turkey at this time so it will bake onto the bird.
Now place your insert pan with Turkey in the oven (uncovered) at 400 degrees and bake until desired brownness is achieved. maybe 30 or 45 minutes. Then place turkey and insert pan back into your Nesco roaster, cover and finish baking. Make sure your Nesco is warmed up while browning your turkey, so there is no cooking interruption.
To roast turkey Nesco said to:
Preheat electric roaster to 350 to 400 degrees.
Roast a 10 to 14 lb. turkey for 12 to 17 minutes per pound.
Roast a 14 to 20 lb. turkey for 13 to 18 minutes per pound.
"Turkey should be roasted at 400 degrees F., for the first and last hour; roast at 350 degrees F., for the remaining time." Nesco also states, "for crisper skin, baste, then remove liquid during roasting time."
ENJOY! and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!.

My mom has made turkeys in the big roasters, and thats the only issue - browning. She used to just pop it in the oven the last 30 minutes to do that. It always came out really great - those roasters can be a real space saver when your oven is full! And her turkeys, when she used the roaster, were always really moist and delicious!
I totally agree with Esmerelda. I just bought a Nesco roaster, and did a trial run with a big stuffed chicken yesterday. The chicken turned out beautifully moist, but it didn't have that brown and crispy skin that a bird does coming out of an oven. I didn't think to brown it in the oven, but we all loved it anyways.
Happy Thanksgiving!
