Some Last minute Thanksgiving question?!
Answers: This may sound retarded...but this is my first Thanksgiving cooking myself. I don't know how to make sweet pot. I just bought the canned ones to make it easier, but what do I add in it to make it taste really good. I am having my bfs fam and mine over. I need something tasty...I know its out of the can, but help me make it taste yummy!!!
drain, place in casserole dish and sprinkle with brown sugar and butter and bake to heat and melt brown sugar or add marshmallows on top and bake
No worries that they are out of a can. What you should do is pour the sweet potatoes into a bowl and then mix in a little bit of orange juice( with pulp is best) and a small amount of butter ( you can leave out the butter if you are watching your fat content) mix in a chopped orange or chopped pineapple. Place in a baking dish and sprinkle miniature marshmallows on top. Bake until the marshmallows have slightly browned and melted into the sweet potatoes. This is my families favorite recipe.
Congrats on your first Thanksgiving. I hope it is a great success!
here's what we do when we have sweet potatos
we take and drain the juice off of 2 cans of sweet potatos and drain it into a bowl. then add 2 tsps. of cornstarch. pour over the sweet potatos. Then stir and add brown sugar. mix all together. bake in a 350* oven for 30 to 45 minutes. when almost done top with miniature marshmallows. slide back in oven until melted.
Put the entire contents into a saucepan until they are hot. Then drain.
For mashed: Mash them completely and add 1/2 stick of butter or margarine, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 tsp of salt and a sprinkle of cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice if you have it). Mix completely.
For casserole: Make the mashed recipe above and put into casserole dish. Mix 1/2 stick of butter or margarine, 1/2 cup of crushed pecans, and 1/4 cup of brown sugar. Spread over sweet potatoes and bake at 350 until golden brown.
OR sprinkle with mini marshmallows and bake until golden brown.
Hey, we all had our first time cooking something for Thanksgiving. There are tons of recipes out there for all kinds of sweet potato casseroles that are great(allrecipes.com). I am just following the direction on my can of Bruces Yams for Southern Style Favorite Yams. Also I am doubling this recipe.
Hope you find something you like.
Southern Style Yams
1 29 oz can yams, drained and mashed
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 Tbls melted butter
1/4 cup cream
16 marshmallows (I am just dumpin in some mini ones cuz that is what I already have).
Preheat oven to 350. Blend yams, sugar, salt, spices, butter and cream. But 6 marshmallows in half and mix in with yams. Turn into a greased baking dish. Top with remaining marshmallows. Bake for 20 minutes for until mixture is puffy and delicately brown. Serves 6.
What Cheryl B said. I do mine the same way except I put a shot of Jack Daniels in mine. The baking process takes out the alcohol and leaves a good taste.
This fabulous recipe came from allrecipes.com. Or you can just use the recipe on the can if you want. This one's better though!
