Pie Crust question?!


Question: I'm making apple pies today and I forgot to buy myself pie plates.

I have two 9 inch round cake pans that are about 1 3/4" deep. Will this work or do I need to go buy some pie plates?

They will work just fine. The only difference will be that they don't look like a traditional pie. It won't matter once it hits the tummy, though.

You can try, but not recommended. Quick go buy pie tins

If you're making the crust from scratch, you'll need to make more to get it up and over the rim, Just make a double batch and use what you need. You'll just end up with a deep dish pie, you won't have the nice curve as the crust goes up but I think you'll be just fine.

Of course..........and if you don't like all that crust up the edge............why not roll it out long and wide enough to fit in the bottom of a 9 X 13

Sure, their is no reason that they won't work as well as regular pie tins. But I have never heard of a cake so thin.

They should work ......basically the same dimensions as a pie tin.

If I were you I would go buy a couple of pie plates, while you're at it also pick up some pie crust.

I think they MIGHT work if you make sure your crust is thicker than normal, to stand up to the vertical side of the cake pan. I say you make this an experiment and let me know how it goes: go buy 1 pie crust, and use the cake pan for the other. I would do it, but I'm traveling tomorrow (unfortunately). Thats a good question!

I have made pies in cake pans. It worked but I missed the slanted sides. I baked my pumpkin pies in cake pans until I could afford to buy pans.

The presentation will not look good.... I wouldn't do it.

It will also be hard to get the crust settled in the dish.... Which could cause frustration..

If I were you, I would go buy some disposible tins....... Unless you want everyone to know it was from scratch - then buy glass.....

Or, just buy the ready crust! Take some of the stress out of the day!

Remember glass can't bake above 350-375........

My pie crust could be used for shoe leather so I asked the expert, friend of mine who is an excellent cook.
The pie would be a "deep dish pie" with a high crust and thick. If you were to put a top crust on it would then be way too thick

Yes. You will end up with "deep dish" apple pie. You will have to work the softened pie crust gently up the sides of the pans and and add more apples. The top crust will be the same. Add a tad extra baking time...watch in. you could put it in, as is and flute/crimp the edges where they would be in a pie plate. Necessity is the mother of invention!

No this wont work. The reason is that the pans will be too deep and may cause the crust to crumble when you cut them unless you're not concerned about the appearence.
Go out and buy the tins..they are cheap and you dont have to worry about transferring the pies or cleaning them.
This will also allow for proper cooling as well.
Remember also the deeper then pan the more stuffing and the longer the time to cook them so they may not bake evenly.

It will work I have used a variety of pans to make apple pie including a spring form.

Yes I would think it would work, But make a thick Pie Crust it will hold better when you are cutting it, The filling will stay in place....I hope it comes out yummy! Save me a piece. Plzzz. LOL!
