Think its to help them slide off the plate :-)

Branston beans are the best

Flavor, baked beans are very bland, originally they were sold in syrup, till tomato sauce was invented, thank god for that!!

its for colour! have you seen a bean without sauce? doesent look tasty!

It's to make your farts greasier. Ever hear that ditty? Beans, beans, the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot. The more you toot, the better you feel. Eat them beans at every meal. Or this one; Beans, beans, the food of my heart. The more you eat, the more you fart. The more you fart, the better you feel. Eat them beans at every meal.

They don't have to be in tomato sauce.

Boston Baked Beans

1 pound dried pea or navy beans
? pound salt pork or bacon
6 T dark molasses
1 tsp dry mustard
1 t salt
? cup brown sugar

Rinse and sort beans under cold water. Cover with cold water and let soak overnight. Drain and rinse several times in cold water.

In a Dutch over, cover the beans with 6 cups of water and bring the water to a boil, boil for 15 minutes. Pour off water, add 6 cups boiling water, salt pork and simmer for 15 minutes. Then let them stand while completing next step.

In a bowl, combine molasses, mustard and salt with 3 cups boiling water, stirring until mixture is smooth.

Drain beans and put into an over proof container. Pour molasses mixture over beans, thoroughly mixing.

Bake covered at 275 for 7 hours, stirring occasionally, and adding more water if necessary. Bake the beans uncovered for an additional hour or until they are very tender and the sauce is thickened.

don't know but i do love a baked bean toasted sandwich.

Beans on their own are very dry,Thats why they use tomato sauce.

Yes your right, - it stops them rolling, and the sauce also helps them slide to your fork - but I still get them down my front! I love Heinz beanz.
