Hubby's pick or mine? I would love your opinions please.?!

Question: I am having 6 friends for dinner on Sunday evening. I am serving a substantial entree and main, but would love to have fruit / cheese / olive platters in lieu of sticky, creamy desserts. My husband feels I ought to serve more traditional sweet desserts. What do you think? Please say honestly if you think my idea would be too disappointing .Thank you so much for any advice you can give - much appreciated.

Is there any way you could do both. I would love the fruit, cheese, and olive platters as I love salty things. But, there are always those people who live for dessert and are going to be disappointed. Good luck! Could you do a Fruit and cheese tray and add to bowls of dip next to it. One could be melted chocolate for the fruit. And, the other can be philadelphia cream cheese mixed with marshmallow fluff. Then they have something sweet with the fruit and cheese. Then you can have the olive platters. And, on the table you can have a fruit tart and a cheese cake. Why not?

i like sweets. maybe you can compromise, and serve angel food cake or something that's lighter.

They are your friends, you should know what they like. Serve to make them happy, not you or your husband. Say for instance some of them like ice cream and others like olive platters, why not serve both and let them decide what they want?

I would prefer your idea, but you could have some truffles and macaroons for those who must have their sweets!

I have huge sweettooth, so i'd be very distressed, esp. if I found out it was a concious decision!

I agree with hubby. Most people like sweet deserts after a meal.

add a nice cream sauce, custard, or gelato to that fruit and you will be fine. If it is a substantial meal most people will not even be in the mood for desert and serving something light will be a nice surprise. Also consider serving a desert wine like a Moscat or Riesling.

I'd much prefer the platter but maybe you could also serve a creme brulee with the fruit let the guests pick

How about a compromise? Fruit salad? And ice cream.
I always try to have more than one option, because some people don't like puddings. And for others, like me, that's the whole point of the meal!

fruit and cheese platter
DEFINATELY

there is nothing better than finishing off a nice meal with oatcakes, cheese, and grapes

your guests will not be disappointed and those who look a little weird when you put it down, will eat it, be surprised, and impressed, and will no doubt do it themselves at their next party,

Little panacottas with raspberry sauce, a small serve..cheap too. Then your platter with wine...too much? What's the dinner ideas? If I had cheese on toast then pizza, I wouldn't then want cheese on biscuits!! you know what i mean?

you got a good idea going there but why don't you please everyone and do both?

I think a fruit and cheese tray is a nice substitute for sticky sugary desserts. Especially this close after the Holiday (if you are in the States). People are probably pied and caked out for a little while.

When we have dinner parties I often find everyone is too full for desert especially something sickly sweet. Your platter is a great idea and perhaps you could serve some dry fruit and bell peppers stuffed with fromache. Figs dry or fresh would be nche wth the cheese and olive

I'd do both - a cheese board with olives & dried fruits.
A platter of fresh fruit.

A large chocolate or black berry gateu or something!

After a substantial (and no doubt delicious) entree and main, a fruit/cheese platter would be wonderful! Just make sure the fruit is fresh and the cheese is the best you can get (go to a market if possible). Go for it!

Just a thought... tiramisu, made with fresh mascarpone cheese, would be moreish enough to satisfy sweet tooths... yum... or fresh figs stuffed with mascarpone.... oh dear, got to go eat now....

Hey,
I would like to eat Cheese cake if i was one of ur friends..... ^_^
Or u can do some Ice cream.....(home made ones r the best)

I THINK YOUR IDEA WITH THE FRUIT /CHEESE AND OLIVE PLATTER SOUNDS MUCH NICER THAN THE CREAMY DESSERTS, AND ALSO MUCH HEALTHIER. GOOD LUCK AND HOPE YOUR MEAL GOES WELL.

I think you'll be fine with your platters, especially if you provide some nice dips or fondue with your fruit. Maybe even a dessert/ice wine

sweets!!

Well 1st of all fruit/cheese/olives etc you would serve as an appetizer, not a dessert.Appetizers, Entree'and Main dishes are usually savory dishes. You wouldn't serve cheese and cracker after a meal. Sorry I would go with your Hubby and stick to sweet dessert and all desserts do not have to be sticky and creamy, you could serve chocolate cover strawberries, sorbet, pound cake etc. good luck...

Your idea is a French tradition. A cheese course at the end of the meal may be too strange for some people's taste if they are not accustomed to it. Compromise by offering your platter and also a decadent dessert.

Does it have to be one or the other? Can you do a cheese/fruit/olive tray (which is a fabulous idea) and add a large chunk of chocolate to be cut and eaten with the fruit? Perhaps you could do a few different types of chocolate and maybe some nuts.

I dont see olives showing up after dinner, but I do understand the less-gooey alternative as being proper.
Perhaps a bit of a compromise? Maybe the fruit and dessert cheese tray in addition to some dinner mints, or chocolate covered fruits - maybe a liqueur as well?
I don't think every dinner requires a cake to be done well.
Good luck.

Let me see. I've just had dinner and what would I like?

I like a good cup of java after dinner or a hot cup of Earl Grey tea.

I've also been enjoying biscotti with my tea and coffee.

A variety of cookies could be a light dessert.

Olives? Cheese? Fruit? Hmmmm. Maybe if the meal was lite?

Cheese? Got crackers? Ritz are the ones I like best.

Olives? Maybe a couple just for a taste.

Fruit? A fruit sampler plate? A variety?

Strawberries! Can you get good ones this time of year?

Cherries Flambé. Now, that's a fruit dish. Flame on baby.

Wait! Wait! Wait!

I found it! Here is a small blurb about it:

This party pizza includes a variety of tasty layers of sweet and fruity goodness. A scrumptious sugar-cookie crust starts off the pizza, followed by a layer of luscious cream cheese “sauce”. A colorful array of fresh fruit toppings creates the next layer. A fruity glaze and optional chocolate drizzle completes the pizza. (Fresh fruit is preferable to canned or frozen.) Depending on the season, use whatever fresh fruit is in stock.

Yum! That's yum. I say!
