1930's Themed Party?!

Question: My grandmother was born in the 30's and turns 75 soon. We are having a Dirty Thirties party for her to mark the occasion. What were some typical alcoholic drinks that can be offered? What music was popular? Any help is appreciated.

This could be really cool.

The 1930’s were an interesting period. During the depression, women were forced to tailor their old clothes, but in the mid-30's, there was a surge in elegance and a more "regal" style. Also in the 30's, legendary beauty icons emerged, such as Bette Davis, Jean Harlow, Josephine Baker and Vivien Leigh.

Also, after the repeal of Prohibition, the 1930's are considered to be the "golden era of the cocktail" - apparently all the bartenders in the illegal bars had developed some pretty great skills.

Some popular choices were:

Whiskey Cocktail

2oz Irish or rye whiskey
1 dash Angostura bitters
2oz Irish or rye whiskey
1 dash Angostura bitters

In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine ingredients and stir. Strain and serve in a glass with a cherry.

Tom Collins

2 oz gin
juice of 1 lemon
2 tsp powdered sugar
carbonated water

In a mixing glass with ice, combine gin, sugar and juice. Shake 15 times. Pour into an 8 ounce glass. Add soda water to suit.

The Zombie (very strong, use caution)

1 oz light rum
1 oz golden rum
1 oz dark rum
1 oz apricot brandy
1 oz pineapple juice
1 oz papaya juice
Dash of Grenadine or other syrup
1/2 oz 151-proof rum

Shake all ingredients except the 151-proof rum in a shaker with ice. Strain into a collins or hurricane glass filled with ice cubes. Float the 151-proof rum on top. Garnish with pineapple and cherry.

As for music, jazz was all the rage, but check out iTunes in their music mixes section. I'm pretty sure they have a collection of music specifically from the 1930's.

Have fun with this one ...

Well, in the 30's there was prohibition and the depression. A lot of bootleg rum, gin etc...
If I were you I would reconsider the 1930's themed party
