Why, finger foods, of course! =)

Whenever we have a party, whether it's casual or formal, we always put out some sort of finger foods. A couple platters of something light, tasty and inexpensive.

For starters, chips are always a cheap and easy way to please a crowd. Everyone loves chips. Add some salsa, guacamole or dip and you're stylin!

Pretzels are cheap and easy. As are deviled eggs, cold cuts, cheese and crackers and a shrimp cocktail platter. You can buy a huge one at the market for around 12 dollars.

The cold cuts, cheese and crackers are very good and very easy. They really do look nice when you put a little effort into them. Cut your cheeses all into nice, uniform squares (or use a small cookie cutter to put them into any shape you like) get several different varieties of crackers and lay them out in order on a nice big tray. Then either roll the meats and lay them out or place small squares out. Just make sure it's all in order by shape and size. Formation is a HUGE part of a successful food tray.

Little smokies (bite sized sausages, in case you didn't know) are really good. Heat them up and put them out with toothpicks and plenty of napkins.

A nice fruit platter with mixed fruits would be good. You could also buy a bag of mixed nuts, just don't forget to put out the nut crackers!

Also, don't forget to put out some sweets! Cookies and brownies are perfect for this. There are a MILLION cookies you can make that are delicious, easy and cheap, cheap, cheap! Check out any Betty Crocker cook book or website for good recipes.

Make sure to have plenty of toothpicks, napkins, small plates and forks for picking up meats and cheeses. Hope all goes well! Good luck. =)

Homemade candied nuts - there are dozens of recipes out there, but I like this one:

Nonstick vegetable oil spray
3 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon (generous) freshly ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1 1/2 cups pecan pieces

Preheat oven to 325°F. Spray baking sheet with nonstick spray. Combine corn syrup and next 4 ingredients in large bowl. Stir to blend. Add pecans; stir gently to coat. Transfer to baking sheet.
Place large piece of foil on work surface. Bake pecans 5 minutes. Using fork, stir pecans to coat with melted spice mixture. Continue baking until pecans are golden and coating bubbles, about 10 minutes. Transfer to foil. Working quickly, separate nuts with fork. Cool. (Can be made 3 days ahead. Store airtight at room temperature.)

I also went to a movie party once where there was a popcorn buffet and thought this was so cute. Basically, the hosts rented a popcorn machine (not expensive from a local party supply house), and whipped up a bunch of popcorn. Then, they offered a buffet of toppings and mix-ins for the popcorn - sweet and salty.

I'm not a big fan of popcorn myself, but it was a really cute idea.

Think simple and enjoy yourself. Get a box of frozen Bagel Pizza Bites from Costco or Sams.

I had a party last weekend, and prepared my usual - chicken wings, mozzarella stcks & pizza nuggets (all store bought) I prepared spinich dip (recipe from Knorr.ca) with triscuts and french bread for dipping, chips and onion dip (tub of sour cream and packet of onion soup mix) Went over great and is inexpensive. The homemade stuff made it more personal, and the "pop in the oven" stuff is good because time is short, and there are other things that need done!!

chocolate pecan turtles
you need small pretzel knots or squares, hershey kisses and whole pecans--
heat oven to 200 degrees, lay out all the pretzels on a cookie sheet, top each one with a kiss, stick in the oven for just a few mins, just enough to soften the kiss, keep an eye on them, they shouldn't melt down or look any different, my oven this takes about 2 mins. take them out of the oven and press down on each kiss with a whole pecan. since you are just barely warming the kisses none of the chocolate should leak thru the pretzel holes. move off cookie sheet and let cool for about 15 mins. soooooo yummy! good with rolos instead of kisses too!
