Fruit tray or veggie tray?!
Answers: im making one for 50 pople and i was woundring what 1 is cheaper nd for the 1 thats cheaper wat do i need and how much stuff do i need thanxxs
Shrimp trays, they run about the same as buying all the other stuff and are more appealing, and classy.
50 people about 30 lbs, easier to make too. Boil and refrigerate until serving
Fruit is expensive and orange is almost a dollar and melons are $3 to $6 and apples are high grapes are about $2.5 lbs
Veg are expensive at this time of year Shrimp is the way to go. Less than $2.00 lb
EDIT: is this for Christmas? You could have cookie trays, and get some blueberry and cranberry bread spread cream cheese on them (make like a sandwich, top and bottom) cut into fours you will need 3 loafs of each and 3 cream cheese's this is really good! I had this in a restaurant once and wanted to remember it. Thanks for making me think of it!!! This and the cookies! Go great together!
You can buy one loaf and taste it before you decide!

The vegetable tray would be cheaper. You would need 4 heads of cauliflower, 4 bunches of broccoli, and 4 pounds of baby carrots as well as one bottle of french dressing, one bottle of ranch style dressing and one bottle of italian dressing.
As u r making for 50 why not make half & half ? there would be a choice for your guests to get from whichever they wish or even both.
the veggie tray would probably be cheaper. Carrots, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower are what I generally see on a veg tray. It's hard to say how much...if other food is going to be served, you will need just enough so everyone can have a nibble or two...but more if there is less other food being served. A ranch dressing type of dip is usually pretty good with it.
Same with fruit but I suggest a dip of 1 container strawberry cream cheese mixed with 1 container of marshmallow cream...this is good on all fruit...

going to need both; not everyone likes veggie's and vice versa :~)

i think the veggie tray is cheaper , but why not do 1/2 and 1/2 that way the 50 people get both
At the store where I work, both sell for about $3.99 per pound. It is winter here so everything is out of season. The fruits that we get in from other states and/or countries are not the best quality or flavor this time of year so you might want to consider this. Veggies on the other hand seem to be pretty consistent. Figure about a 1/4 pound per person.
Costco is your friend. How about one of those monstrous Costco shrimp cocktail trays or their ham and cheese trays with different kinds of cheese? You could just transfer it to a nicer plate and none would be the wiser!
Or if you're bent on homemade... Here are my suggestions from most to least costly...
Ham + Cheese Tray.....Costco one has swiss...cheddar..pepper jack....very unimaginative. But you can go to brie, goats cheeses etc route, flanked with little cubes of ham and meats and pate's, and maybe some crackers?
Fruit + Cheese plate...A mini-wheel of Brie cheese at the center of the tray, surrounded by, bunches of grapes cascading over berries and apple slices...Brie is supposed to go well with fruit, but in my experience cheddar isn't so shabby either.
Cheese + cracker plate. Big hunks of 3 or 4 cheese varieties in a sea of crackers from 7grain Kashi to Ritz Socials to Table Water
Carrots +Celery + Ranch trays re very old. I'd go with a hearty homemade cheesy or artichoke or spinachy dip, with bell pepper strips and cherry tomatoes and celery for dipping
Chips and salsa tray gone gourmet
You could have a variety of chips...You could pick up blue, white and regular tortilla chips, the color variety would be eye catchy and fun. , and whip up a variety of dips like a little bowl of chilli, guac, salsa....serve in inverted sombrero...
Just some ideas. And remember, Costco is your friend when it comes to serving 50 people.

Veges are always cheap. broccoli, cauliflower, grape tomatoes, sugar snap peas, red bell pepper all cheap and makes a nice platter
