1970's and Disco themed party?!
Answers: I am invited to a surprise 50th birthday party SOON and the theme is the 1970's and Disco. I desperately need suggestions on (1) type of dress, and (2) a great gift for a man who has everything.....can be gag or serious.
For the gift, run (do not walk) to the nearest shop that's selling off its Christmas items cheap. Get a Christmas ornament that looks like a mini disco ball. Run! Quick! Before they're sold out!
Once you have one (I have seen them at Michaels crafts stores) you can take off any Christmas labels or tags and just use it as a mini disco ball. That would be a fun gag gift. You can put it with a classy edible or potable or even a gift card.
For the dress part, see if you can find old yearbooks from the later '70s, like '75-'79. That's wen the real 70s styles were popular. (The styles associated with any given decade usually emerge by the 4th or 5th year of that decade -- in other words, in '71 or '72, we were still wearing what looked like 60s clothes.) Bell bottoms were in, as were (for the gals) loose and flowing cotton clothes. However, unlike in the later 90s, the loose and flowing clothes of the 70s still had a real waistline. That's one way to differentiate those two looks in costuming.

A polyester leisure suit, with a satin shirt, and white shoes...dont forget your gold chains.-Men
Girl- Halter tops cat suits we called them. Hot Pants a granny gown...but you have to have those platform shoes....or the long kaftan type dresses.
I know Im aging myself....LOL but I lived thru the disco days....
