Should I serve hors d oeuvres for adult guests at my 2 yr old's afternoon birthday party?!

Question: I am having a birthday party for my 2yo son at my house. We will have about 10 kids (all ages) and their parents (probably 8 adults) at our house for an afternoon birthday party (around 3pm). I am trying to decide what to plan for this party other than just birthday cake and punch. It seems like I should have appetizers or something special for the adults. Btw, this is all family....grandparents, aunts, uncles, & cousins. I'm not trying to impress anyone, but would like to have a nice party for my guests. Any thoughts?

I would agree that having some food for your adult guests is a good idea! The timing of your party is post lunch and pre-dinner, so I'm sure everyone would appreciate something to snack on. Here are some ideas:

1. Vege platter with ranch dressing
2. Cheese and crackers: several good cheeses, sliced baguettes and crackers.
3. Winter fruits, such as apples, oranges, tangerines etc.

You can probably stop at that, but if you think you'd like something more:

4. Sliced meats: sopressata, salami, fennel salami, with provolone, pepperoncini, marinated olives.
5. Lil Smokies in barbecue sauce
6. Meatballs in marinara in a bread bowl
7. Spinach dip in bread bowl
8. Turkey rollups

I suggest serve things everyone will like such as pizza and fruit with a yogurt dip.
If you made the pizza in small squares perhaps the children will eat it as well as the adults.
Kids generally do not eat at parties.
The only thing I have ever had children actually want to eat -including the cake- is turkey tetrazzini and fruit with yogurt dip.

I don't think so. Typical birthday fare is what is expected. This includes usually pizza, ice cream and cake. You're not having an adult party !

veggie tray, cheese and crackers...

Yes, I would. Make it simple and easy though, stuff you know most people would snack on. Trail mix, chip and dip, fruit platter, meat and cheese platter, veggies, etc...

I think you should put out some bowls of pretzels, chips or maybe a mini sandwich platter for the adults to pick on while the kids play and brew a fresh pot of coffee, right before you serve the cake.

Happy Birthday to your little one =)

Some nice hors d' oeuvres would probably be a good idea. Try some egg rolls chopped up, quiche, or maybe a small shrimp cocktail. Hope this helps! Enjoy the party, and happy birthday to your two-year-old son! :)

Nachos or Pizza. Both kids and adults will enjoy them.

Well since the party is at 3, it is not necessary to have a lunch. I would put out a veggie and fruit platter and some chips and dip! That way the 2 year old will have something to snack on and the parents too!

yes, you should have some kind of small snack
veggie tray, pizza rolls, chips, taco dip- whatever small stuff you come up with- and drinks of course (not alcoholic if you don't want)
heres a good refreshing punch I make that would be good for your party
mix one container frozen orange juice concentrate
one jug juice like orange/banana/pineapple
and a 2 liter of ginger ale
float a ice ring made from a jello mold in the bowl with it for a pretty look

The first thought that came to my mind would be to have pigs in a blanket or maybe make some mini-hamburgers. Have those set out on a table with various condiments. You can top it off with a fruit/veggie/cracker tray, chips, some different kids of dip, and non-alcoholic drinks.

I think anytime you have company, it's nice to put something out for guests to snack on. You can do simple things, chips and dip, a vegetable dip, or guacamole are low key... mini sausages in bbq sauce, or even setting out deli meats and cheese and rolls, if guests would like to make a sandwich or something would be nice.
