Be formal... but comfortable. Pick food that you can prepare as much as possible ahead of time so you're with your guests moer than you are in the kitchen.
Remember... formal doesn't mean complicated.

Think about your table too. Formal place settings, centrepiece all that Martha Stewart kind of stuff.
Formal means cloth napkins not paper. Dollar stores have great stuff if you don't have that. Table cloth too rather than place mats. Water glasses and wine glasses. Formal doesn't mean matching... so don't get wigged out on that side either.

Appetizers either at the table or while you are chatting with your guests.

Soup - if you like that . and if you are comfortable.
Main course... served on the plate rather than bringing serving dishes and doing it family style... I love doing this... adds a bit of swish. and less clean up too.
Salad after the main... a little European
dessert and fruit and cheese and port maybe...

remember to have fun. Formal isn't stiff.. either..
good luck
