Coincidence! I'm planning my mother's 60th birthday party and I'm using a 60s music and food-fads theme for the party. In the early 60s, French food was very "in", so a French chicken recipe or Boeuf Bourginonne (beef burgundy) would be appropriate. For a party, I always go for boneless meats and salads with flair but that are in small pieces. If your mother isn't/wasn't frou-frou in any way, try a "retro foods" theme - foods that were popular in women's magazines in the 60s, especially something with hot dogs or Spam! A Jell-o mould is an absolute MUST!! If it's a surprise party, you don't want to ruin the surprise by asking her what her favourite songs were when she was younger, just ask her casually about any songs she HATED, then make sure to NOT play those songs!

Another great way to present party food is serve everything in miniatures or as appetisers. Food is always tastier if it's speared with a frilly toothpick! Fruit kebabs, individual quiches or spinach pies wrapped in phyllo, Swedish Meatballs, Rumaki (nobody makes that anymore!), or even fondue! And for dessert - cupcakes!

Women of your mother's and my mother's age LOVE creamy drinks, so keep the Bailey's and Amarula on hand for something special. Also a very nice bottle of champagne would be appropriate for a toast! Make sure a designated driver is available for those who "reminisce" too much.

Have each of the guests write a paragraph on why your mum is special to them. That's always something wonderful to do at a aprty and it doesn't cost a thing!

I will officially be 60 on March 15Th. I overheard my two adult daughters discussing the party they plan for me. It will be for a 6 year old. Store bought cake with that terrible icing, ice cream, kool aide, cookies and milk. They will decorate with balloons, streamers, and maybe a pinata. It is in the rough planning stage I guess. But if it comes about it will be the best birthday party I have had since I was 25.

For my 25th birthday, I was in the Air Force. My wife invited the entire wing to my party. Her invitations said that 25 was such a tacky age everyone had to show up tacky. The wing commander arrived in a toga. The president of the officer's wife club had and old robe with safety pins holding it closed and her wig was falling off. My wife made me dress in tuxedo pants, Hawaiian shirt, and combat boots. It was a great party and ended with breakfast at 5 am in my kitchen.

There are two good ideas for you.

Appetitizers, canned cheese (makes rosettes) on small crackers with a little strip of Sweet Red Pepper on top
Then shrimp cocktail, on green leaf lettuce leaves with small cup of Shrimp sauce. (salad)
Baked or BBQ'd Salmon fillet (lay strips of bacon on the salmon before cooking and serve the salmon with the bacon as it is) The flavor is terrific. (at least 6oz per person as less than that is skimpy, more than that is too much)
Roasted Vegetables...(very flavorful and colorful) this made a 9x13 pan, and for 8 people I would double it...(might have a bit of leftovers, better than not enough for 2nds) Have copies of the recipe as you will be asked for it.

Add more garlic, cut down on the lemon. We used the small pear shaped Red Tomatoes and these had a great flavor when roasted. We did this for Christmas and it was a keeper.
I wouldn't serve anything else heavy with this...so maybe a rice dish. White and wild rice would be great add some peas for color.
Dessert: Costco sells a wonderful, creamy Cheesecake, plain that you can decorate for her B'Day, with fresh flowers, and or doodads....
