Ideas for a fun baby shower on a budget?!

Question: I have to throw a baby shower for my best friend. I'm on a budget but I dont want it to completely suck. What are some creative and fun games/activities we can do?

Also, is it rude to not serve alot of food at a baby shower (we're thinking a cake, some sandwhiches, chips, and a few side dishes, I dont want to spend my entire budget on the food.)

I am very thrifty when it comes to having parties!
first- buy all your food at Aldi, it's so much cheaper and its still quality food. You don't have to make tons of food or expensive things- just make sure to have enough for everyone. Finger sandwiches and chips is great for food, you can cut up the sandwiches pretty and put a toothpick with a cherry tomato or olive on it for a fancier look. maybe a pasta salad also, veggie tray, deviled eggs, taco dip is always the first to go at my parties, little weenies in a crock pot- whatever you want! make a batch of punch to serve instead of loading up on soda. here's a good punch recipe I find very refreshing- mix one jug mixed juice orange/pineapple/bannana- one frozen concentrate of OJ- and one 2 liter of ginger ale- you can put the punch in a inexpensive baby bath and float a rubber duckie in it for a great look (plus it's a extra gift for the mom-to-be!)
get all your decorations from the dollar store- they have ton's of cute baby stuff now- centerpieces, garlands, paper plates and napkins, plastic silverware, streamers, and helium balloons.
right now is a great time to find some prizes for the games too- either pick some stuff up from the dolalr store or head to regular stores and hit up their clearance areas for some bargains- Christmas stuff is on sale- get whatever you know you would like to recieve- candles, wash cloths, shampoos, whatever!
one game I think is really fun is "Guess Mommys Tummy Size". have each guest cut off a piece of string to the size she thinks her tummy is (don't let them get to close to her to try and measure it!) then mommy walks around and everyone measures up to see who's the closest in string length- you only need sissors and some string or ball of yarn.
another good one is baby bingo- make up a bingo sheet and have each guest write down any baby item they want in each square (ex:rattle, bottle, blanket) then as mommy is opening her gifts they check off the items as she recieves them and say first three to get bingo(or how ever many you want) get a prize.
the "guess the candy" one is a good one I do all the time also, it's just time consuming counting all the candy! Pass it around to everyone and let them write down thier guess. you can get a jar and candy from the dollar store also.
another one is a word scramble game, just mix up baby related words and guests unscramble them. (I have one saved on my computer, if you send me your direct email address I can forward it over to you.)
I like to find a big basket or doll cradle to put all the prizes in, looks real cute.
Have fun!

I'm doing a baby shower for my sister in 3 weeks. I'm on a budget as well. What we're doing is getting a local sandwhich/subs company to do a platter thing that will serve about 15 people the sandwhiches are 3 inches. It costs $25, we're getting 2. Then a really cool cheap thing is we want fruit (nice and healthy), so I'm going to make a fruit boquet using grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe and pineapple. I will be rinsing and cutting it myself, so we'll save lots of money there. I'm going to assembe it in a beautiful vase and it's cheap and yummy. Then we're just having some chips. Big bags of cheap ones. For drinks we're just doing canned soda and capri sun fruit juices (my sister's fave, and she's 22). We'll be spending about $75 on food for 30 people. Not bad!!!

Well I just recently went to a baby shower, and there was a really funny game. What you do is buy diapers and different kind of chocolate and candy bars, you melt the chocolate in the microwave and then put it in the diaper. You hand out pen and paper to everyone, and then pass the diapers around with the melted chocolate, then they all have to write down what kind of chocolate they think it is. It is so funny seeing everyone sniff the chocolate in the diapers, whoever gets the most correct wins. For the food I think simple chips and dips are great, also vegetables, fruit, and maybe some mini sandwiches would be good. And cupcakes for dessert, and some little mints set out in dishes for anyone who would like to freshen their breath up. Hope I was able to help at all, you should really try the game it's great, hope it turns out to be a success :)

A very fun baby shower game It is called "bloomers"~ Buy two rose buds and hot glue them to a safety pin (or buy a silk Boutonniere from Hobby Lobby). Put it in a gift box and wrap it like a gift and then repeat this by wrapping the box again about 3-5 times. You play it like musical chairs. You have the mom to be start passing it to the person next to her while the music plays. When the music stops the person that is left holding it has to unwrap the first layer. You play this until the last wrap is taken off. The reason it is so much fun is you tell everyone that there is a pair of bloomers in the box and who ever is left holding it has to wear them. Watch everyone try their hardest to not be the one left holding the box. It is a lot of fun.
I have thrown several baby showers and I usually ask each guest to bring a side dish with them. It is fun to eat the different foods people bring as well as saving on your budget. You can even do this with tea and cookies for an early afternoon shower. It if is a "it's a girl" baby shower, tulle (white or pink) with hot glued flowers all over it is very pretty. Go to walmart and buy a pretty flower bunch or two and then take them off and hot glue them to the tulle and hang it from the ceiling over the gift and cake tables. Daisy's are cute and you can get them is any color. I hope this helps and have fun...

Have each guest bring a small dish to pass - make it a white party - dishes should be white or clear - you add a colored decoration. A couple of nice white candles in clear votive holders and you're good. Pick up Napkins - plates and balloons in the color of the nursery. Very very simple. Have a friend help you with cleaning the dish to send home with guest. Have guests wear something matching your color -- it gives them a reason to shop! have music playing before guests get there - it sets a mood and gets the party going. Find a gigantic clear vase or jar - fill it with candy the color of the party and have each guest try to guess how many so and so's are in it. Use it as your centerpiece on the main table. Just an idea!
