Party Platter in leiu of home cooked dinner?!

Question: Since we moved, my husband and I have spent a lot of time with my cousin, his wife, and their 2 year old daughter. They have us over all the time, and we always invite them over but generally it's hard since their little girl is so little and goes to bed early... so most of the time we go to their home...

We have had them over for dinner a few times and tonight is one of those times... We've had a little drama here for the last 18 hours... we found a homeless kitten last night, have bathed it, clipped its claws, taken it to the vet, etc... and with that and work we simply haven't had time to prepare dinner and they're coming over right at 5.

THE QUESTION: Would it be completely inappropriate to get a sandwich platter from Subway, buy some chips and serve some picnic type sides like macaroni salad and baked beans for dinner? They're pretty laid back and have served us pizza on several occasions

Would it be OK if we let them know ahead of time that we are having sandwiches

You sound like a wonderful hostess to be worried about the meal. What you've outlined sound fine. Most of the time when people come over, it's not for the food anyways, it's for your company, and you sound like a sweetie :-)
Thank you for rescuing the kitten. I am a volunteer for the SPCA, and I appreciate everyone who helps save an animal.
Have a great dinner tonight, no matter what you serve!

Im sure it would be especially if you explained the reason. Or you can always go to a grocery store deli and pick up some chicken and sides if you dont think a sandwich platter would be enough.

There is nothing wrong with what you propose...sometimes this is a welcome change to formal meals. Let your cousin know what's going on with your hectic life. If I were in your cousin's place, I would appreciate the fact that you wanted the company despite all that is going on in your house. A meal like this might allow all of you to relax...and talk, interact with the child as well as the kitten.

I'd LOVE that, can I come over for dinner?? Honestly we do this quite a lot for ourselves, if neither of us can be bothered cooking a proper meal we get loads of party nibbles in and make up a platter, maybe we'll add some potato wedges and that makes it more filling. I am sure if you tell them the dramas you've had they'll laugh and enjoy it. Good luck with the wee baby kitten!!!

why not order some Chinese or a tray of lasagna from your local spots instead? a little more dinner-like than sandwiches. make a quick salad or something to go with it.

why not a pizza or subway. You could go to your local grocery and get Roasted Chickens. they have the sides there too like stuffing and broccoli cheese or stuff like that. You could totally cheat! I'm all for it.
