Dr. Seuss party for a teen?!

Question: My daughter wants to have an original twist on a birthday party. Inspired by all the teens I see enjoying the "Grinchmas" exibit at Universal Studios, I suggested a Dr Suess theme. What do you think? This is her 16th birthday and I thought I would use "Oh the places you can go" story as a guide for decor and stuff. She wants to have a great time with her friends in a fun and carefree environment.

I have this posted on the adolesence board as well, I wanted to get more opinions.

I added the following in reply to answeres (mostly kids) who where saying she should "go out" and party:
"Going out and having a blast" isn't an option. Number one, she is turning 16 and most of her friends are her age and younger. Our families are all very close none of us just turn the kids lose out on the town. Recipe for disaster. She has a wide range of friends, boys and girls ranging from girly girls to athletes.

I think it's a great idea.

I feel the need to expand on my answer. Since you thought of the idea I assume it is fitting with her personality. You certainly did not just pull it out of a hat and say oh sure this is what we'll do even if she hates it. Just because she is 16 does not mean her and her friends and cousins would not go for this kind of party.

Continued: I wonder if parents know what the local school dances are like? I have found that the majority of teens actually would love someone to step in and set bountries and "keep it light." Report It

  • Umm just wondering why would a girl for her sweet sixtenn want a Dr.Seus themed birthday?

i dont realy think that a Dr. Seuss party is that great of an idea but u should ask your daughter and if she likes it then do it

I like Superfriends better for teens.

Dr Suess seems a little too young.

a regular party would be nice, a Dr Seuss theme would be for a younger child

i think it is a great idea as long as you're positive she wants it to be Dr. Seuss id go for something more like a TV show she likes or something

dr. seuss is a unique idea, but i'm afraid it might be hard to find decor and food. i read the poem, and it's cute, but it dosen't give me inspiration for other ideas.

I understand that you don't want to host a party where drugs, alcohol, etc. could occur. and there's nothin' wrong w/that. However as a teen girl who's sweet 16 is comming up - i think that at almost 16 something alittle more grown up might be better. some dancing and a different theme might suit your daughter better.

If you want to keep a "safer", "younger" type of environment then stuff like goodie bags, candy, and pinatas can be fun!!! i'm planning on having a pinata at my party!!! other stuff like the macerana and funky chicken can also be fun but not as young as a dr. suess theme.

if your daughter really loves (100%) the dr. suess idea, then go for it!! however just in case i have some other themes 4 u -

    - pajamas
    - plaid/polka dots
    - winter wonderland
    - beach/laua/summer
    - colors (pick your favorite 2 or 3) like pink and black, all white, blue and silver, black and white.
    - decade, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s
    - a futuristic theme
    - spy
    - specific city like London or New York or Las Vegas.
    - murder mystery
    - carnival
    - casino
    - celebs
    - your favorite sport or hobby
    - mardi gras
    - masquerade
    - asian
    - hollywood/awards show
    - your favorite movie
    - pirates
    - western
    - fiesta
    - princess and princes of course
    - rock and roll
    - magic
    - candy
    - fairytale
    - fashion
    - cartoon characters

remember...she's 16. she'll wanna have some fun. monitor the party...but not to close. since she's 16, give her some trust and let her and her friends have some fun dancing and messing around. (minus the alcohol of course!) good luck!!!
