Is putting plastic over your chairs (when recovering them) tacky?!

Question: I am recovering my dining chairs, and we still have 2 kids that are pretty young and can make quite a mess (9 mo. old, and 2 year old). So I think I should put on the new fabric then put clear plastic over it. My husband thinks this looks tacky, and doesn't want to sit on plastic. Under the circumstances I think it is the most practical. Does anyone who goes to someone's home and see this think it is tacky, ugly or uncomfortable?

Why not get removable clear plastic covers that you could take off for company and holiday dinners? I am sure that your husband is not the one having to clean the upholstery every time your 2 year old spills spaghetti...let him live with the plastic. It will make your life easier.

Another option might be to treat the fabric with Scotch Guard. This will offer some stain resistance, but you will have to repeat the process.

And yet another option could be to put a folded bath towel over the seat that your 2yo sits on. If there is a spill, just pop the towel in the wash and put a clean one down.

Personally, I'd still go with the plastic.

Oh, do what I always did....cover them in the darkest fabric you can find. (I'm speaking about the chairs, of course). They're only young once.( the kids, that is). You'll have nice stuff when they grow up a bit. I promise ;)

I think its tacky..what you should do is buy from like walmart they are cheap you have kids so they will get it dirty ..but they are seat covers like sofa covers..go to that website so you can see what i am talking about . Hope it helps..

My neighbor does that but i think that it is pointless because i think that ur kids might just rip the plastic and my neighbor has a cat so it is really pointless

I'd either Scotchguard the chairs, or cover only the ones the little ones sit on. Yeah, it's a little tacky, but I see your point. It's a LOT less tacky than those people who cover their sofas and lampshades!

Plastic is tacky.... not a fan. You don't want to be sitting on a chair and go slipping and sliding all over the place.

Seeing as they are only cushions, I'd suggest getting a second cover made so that you can take them off and bung them in the wash if they get dirty. Plus you can rotate cushion covers so your house always looks different. Kinda anyways.

p/s. Scotch Guard is GREAT, I'm a huge fan but jjust be weary that if you scotch guard something and then put it in the washing machine, you'll have to scotch guard it again k?

I agree with another comment: folded towels for the children as they can be put in with all the other wash you have! Wouldn't you prefer to be able to see the Real Thing when you look at your chairs? Also, in some things it's wiser to go with what your husband wants and I would say this is one of those areas. Men aren't, usually, long on child-patience and you don't want him annoyed with the babies every time he has to sit on a plastic-covered chair, do you?
