Birthday cake etiquette?!

Question: Early this week there was a birthday in the office. The secretary bought the cake and set a time to cut the cake at 11:45. After the party, I overheard, that 11:45 was an odd time to serve cake. That it should of been done mid morning or late afternoon. Moreover, that she did not know proper office etiquette. Is there such a thing as "office birthday cake" etiquette? I think the girls where just being spiteful. However, it has made me wonder.

I always schedule office b-day cakes around office availability. It's a privilege to be allowed to do that stuff on company time. If they don't like the timing they can skip it and continue to work. Ungrateful employees!!

At my office, everyone begs me to cut the cake as early as possible. I don't think there is an incorrect time to have the cake, though I guess if there was to be a "correct" time I would do it around lunch time, so I see nothing wrong with 11:45.

That seems a good time. Start lunch early! The only etiquette I've seen is on Office Space- pass until everyone has a piece.

Birthday cake etiquette? The only "etiquette" would be to actually SERVE the cake to the guests. The secretary bought the cake, she can serve it any time she wants. The other office workers don't have to eat it.

(My only problem would be that after eating the cake at 11:45, I wouldn't have wanted to eat lunch! So I probably would have taken a small bite and then wrapped it up to save it for dessert.)

As far as I know there is no such thing. Typically it is around lunch time or just before or just after. It depends on the office and depends on when everyone is there to be apart of the cake cutting and eating. So as long as people were there no who cares.

I didnt know there was birthday cake etiquette for the office. You put it out when time permits. If the company wants to complain about it then stop doing it all together.

We stopped celebrating everyones birthday at the office because someone asked me for the value of the cake in their pocket instead of getting a cake. So I made the decision that they didn't really appreciate it.

i would normally think that it would be done by about after lunch like about 2pm because then everyone has had lunch and it more like a dessert or like 3pm ish for a like afternoon snack, maybe they though 11.45 would be like 11 oclock snack type thing
