What should I make for a get together with 3 adults and children 2-9 yrs old?!

Question: I'm going to get together with some girlfriend's of mine and our kids for lunch on MLK day since no one has work. There are 3 adults, and 7 kids ages infant to 9 years old. Obviously we don't have to worry about the babies, but I really enjoy cooking unique but tasty dishes. Anyone got any ideas what type of foods I should cook that will suit all of us? Should we go with hors douvres, or what? Any ideas would be great and recipes would be even better. Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on celebrating MLK day! Although you won't need to worry about the infant, you still have 6 other kids to deal with unless their parents are bringing along dinner for them separately. Here are some ideas for a quick and easy meal:

1. Potluck! What better timing than a day celebrating diversity??? This also lets you off the hook for the entire meal, which can be exhausting and cost prohibitive.
2. Think of a theme that can play itself out with your food. MLK's " I've got a dream" was impactful. But also think about other things that this time can represent, such as "freedom", "equality", and "working together". Incorporate dishes that represent diversity and peace, as well as hope and the dreams for a better future for all of humankind.
3. Keep it simple!
4. Plan a menu around individual tastes, food preferences, possible allergies, and ease in which to make them. Here are some possible menus:

A. Roasted chicken thighs and legs
Wild Rice Pilaf
Chopped Salad with gorgonzola, raisens, and vinagrette
Brownies, cookies
b. Crockpot short ribs
Potato wedges
Corn casserole
Zuchinni
Cupcakes
c. Spaghetti Bolognes with Turkey Italian Sausages and
peppers
Green salad
Hot french bread
Ice cream sundaes
d. Oven baked fried chicken
Mashed potatos and gravey or mac and cheese
Greens cooked with smoked turkey wings
Jello salad
Sweet Potato and pecan pies

For appetizers, how about:

A. Hot artichoke and crab dip with blue corn tortilla chips
B. Green olive tapenade and goat cheese crescent pinwheels.
C. Spinach Dip in a bread bowl
D. Baguette slices topped with gorgonzola and honey, broiled.
E. Sopressata or thin slices of peppered salami spread with cream cheese and wrapped around a small cornichon.
F. Chili Cheese Dip with Fritos and/or tortilla chips
G. Chicken Tenders with peanut dipping sauce
H. Fresh Fruit skewers with a marshmallow cream dipping sauce

The list goes on. Have fun!

reservations would be my choice.
You know that as soon as you try and enjoy whatever you prepared, the little darlings will be whining and biting and tearing each other apart.

Just take them all to chucky cheese, then get a baby sitter or two and go out for a well deserved drink.

Have a cook-out. Burgers and chicken for the grown-ups, and hot dogs with chips for the kids. Have fun.

well, kids like mac and cheese type foods- how about a snazzed up version of that. add some chicken and veggies and a nice creamy sauce
choose one from on here http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/Pasta/Maca...
otherwise search this site, they have a lot of really good recipes!

well, i know that little kids usually only eat what they have eaten before, so keep it simple, like hot dogs. as for the adults, try some different kind of country's food. they would be interested in that, probably.

Do pasta, they have some fun shapes and most kids love pasta, salad & french bread. You could also have a small veggie tray & don't forget the olives. Make Itailian sodas to drink.
