As far as music goes, you got The Bee Gees, KC & the Sunshine Band, Donna Summer, A Taste of Honey, The Village People, Chic, and Sister Sledge to start with.

And the food can be outrageous. Get a bunch of fondue pots and do cheese fondue with the breadsticks and veggies, then do a chocolate fondue with fruits and pieces of poundcake. Fondue was king in the 70's scene!

And make a big jello molded salad with lime jello and all kinds of fruit in it and marshmallows. Make a big batch of punch with Hawaiian Punch and 7up and the obligitory frozen iceberg, made with orange juice with orange slices and marachino cherries (we all had that served to us in the 70's).
There were so many crazy foods served in the 70's, some we still eat now but it's like a joke. Sloppy joe's were first introduced in the 70's (manwich sauce was the first commercial sauce you could buy to make them ,too). Tater tots were also a new food introduced in the 70's as were Mini Quiches, pigs in a blanket and bundt cakes!

Incorporate some of these foods and it'll bring back some memories.

Have lots of fun.

For party invites, buy some old 45 records at a flea market or thrift store and use a permanent metallic marker to write the info on the record. You could deliver them to the local people coming, the rest mail in large brown envelopes found at office supply stores. It would be funny to put on the return address, like Studio 54 or The Playboy Mansion (both very popular in the 70's).

uh disco ball
bring elvis back!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I had a disco party for our 3 year old son's b-day. we bought a disco ball at spencers gifts, (which is STILL in our living room) We bought some disco themed decorations from Party city. The ones that hang down were really cool, but the scene setter were super lame.

We downloaded tons of disco music, and put it on our Ipod, and just had that going. this site is a good one to get ideas for music
http://www.70disco.com/

I also printed out some disco pics (his were of sesame street disco pics) but you could print out some movies that were big then, and frame them up everwhere (we got cheap frames from IKEA (there were I think 5 bright colors each 1 or something) Or even if you could find flyers from previous clubs, like studio 54
You could also have everyone dress the part.. Like michelle Pfiffer from scar face, or john travolta from saturday night fever. or any of the people from roller boogie..

have so much fun!

they have mixed CDs at Best Buy of 70s music- those would be a good idea for a variety of music to play the whole night.
have a Saturday Night Fever dance off!! you can give a special prize to the winner like a CD or 70s movie.
play 70s trivia, or trivia about your mom.
we made a picture board for my moms surprise 60th. We had all kinds of pics of her throughout her life time- she had so much fun showing them off to people and telling them about the pics.
I found a book on Ebay about the year my mom was born- had all kinds of neat stuff in it like what stuff cost back then, news of the times, movies/music. had it out for people to look through.
I also found a Life Magazine from the week she was born, that was really neat. Check on Ebay, or used book stores- you can probly find some old 70s ones to have out for people to look at. Its always fun to look back on the old days and see what people thought about and acted like!
have a disco ball for sure- you can even have a few of them various sizes as centerpieces on the tables.
just think Austin Powers and That 70's show type stuff!
