Why do people throw surprise parties?!

Question: Seriously, do people even like them? I just got another email for a "surprise party" for someone who is retiring at work. I mean, we have at least 2 birthdays and 1 retirement gathering for cake every frickin week, and ALL of them are "surprises". Everyone tiptoes around and I think it's absolutely stupid. To make it worse, every surprise party I've ever gone to that's a real party, the person either knew in advance or hated it because they weren't dressed right or in the mood etc. I guess I'm wondering if anyone likes receiving surprise parties, or is it all some warped or misguided effort on the part of the giver?

it's all a warped & misguided effort on the part of the giver...they want to feel good ......but if you know the person truelly hates surprises then you should comply and not give them a surprise.....

Not everyone likes surprise parties. I despise them myself. However, my wife specifically asked me about a birthday party when she turned 40, and I hemmed and hawed about how we couldn't afford a big to-do and all the work involved, but what she didn't know is I had already conspired with her friends and family to throw her a surprise party. I had her COMPLETELY snowed -- she had no idea I was throwing her a surprise party until she walked into the house and saw the birthday cake on the table. So I guess it depends on the recipient and it also depends on how well the people who throw the party conceal that fact...

Well, some people do like surprise parties.... I gues its because when they walk in and see everyone that has gathered just to celecerate their (event) it makes them feel good.

I don't like them. I guess it's fun to help plan, but it's tiring to hide it from the person and make sure he/she doesn't find out. in my case, the person ALWAYS finds out somehow. it's not worth the effort...
