Any thoughts on a theatre-related birthday party theme that everyone would enjoy?!

Question: I'm using my best friend's basement for my eighteenth birthday party. In celebration of the last dregs of childhood (and an effort to keep it clean), I wanted to have a themed party for 20-30 people, give or take. As many people in my friend group are theatrical, I wanted to have the theme include the theatre - possibly something where each guest has a character or something going in. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I could make this work? (I'll be mixing people that don't usually interact, so some sort of structure that still allows for social interaction would be best.) I considered a murder mystery party, but it seems like too big of a group for it.

Have a mock Academy Award Party and give out in-expensive prizes. Get some tickets from Wal-Mart and decorate the house with those. Get a cheap runner for th "red carpet" use this at the entrance to the party. Just ham it up.

That's a great idea! I think the easiest and most fun thing to do would be to play improve games. They can be hilarious and everyone will interact allot and it fits the theatre theme very well. You can find ideas for improves all over the internet or come up with your own. It's even more fun if you ask the audience to name random items, job descriptions, locations, movies, decades, etc. and have the performers use them or guess them, good luck!

I did a Gone With The Wind party with New Orleans food, pecan pie, etc. Afterwards, we all went to a screening of the movie (nowadays you can rent the dvd for home viewing). You could decorate with Mardi Gras beads and masks if you want. I made sweet potato pie, creole shrimp, baked ham, potato salad, mint juleps with fresh mint, etc.

Ask each person to dress as their favorite theatre character on the invitation and be prepared to do a short skit. This should be very entertaining! People can come up with the neatest things.

OK, so when you send out invites put on the card what their character is. Then, when everyone gets there do improv games and stuff... If you're into theater you should know a few, but there is Who's at the party which is where Everyone gets some crazy role to act out and whoever is chosen as the host must "answer a pretend door" and as more "guests" show up, guess what each of them is acting out. Also, there are prop games where you get all kinds of crazy props (From dollar tree or something) And there are teams that have to choose one and make it into something funny. People can win the games and winners can earn prizes!
