If you have games like ping pong or air hockey or foosball, that's always a hit. You could also try multiplayer video games... see if your friends can loan their systems if you don't have any... Nintendo64 is always great, especially playing Super Smash Bros. or Mario Kart. :)
Otherwise, sometimes spontaneous situations spark the most fun times, if that makes any sense. Just ask what everyone else wants to do, and go with it... simple games like charades or even board games like Monopoly can turn into the highlight of the night with the right people involved... or maybe you could even ask your guests beforehand to see what their ideas might be. Oh, and also make sure the movie is one everyone wants to watch (both guys and girls), like an action or comedy flick (I reccommend Disturbia), otherwise some people might be bored, like if they've seen it before. Go see the Buddy Holly Story, that is what I did for my birthday. Well, that isn't cheap so i don't know. Go bowling.
