Best party you've been to and why?!

Question: I'd like to throw an unforgettable party for the birthdays of several family members at once. I'd love to hear what you think makes a great party. Thanks!

As the host, you need to be prepared and focused. If you have a good time, your guests will too. Make sure you have enough food and beverages and prepare as much in advance as possible - don't get stuck in the kitchen all the time. Have great music ready and don't hesitate to get on the dance floor to heat things up! Think of activities/games that everyone will enjoy; mingle and spend time with your guests. Don't hesitate to ask for help or delegate (things like bar-tending, DJ-ing, serving the food, etc.). Also, don't let your guests drink too much. Now relax and just have fun!

The best party I have ever been to was one my boyfriend threw for my 21st birthday: we danced and danced to Latin music with a little disco (remember this was 1978!) thrown in. And we ate a really good meal that we prepared ourselves! I think people need to dance at a party instead of just sitting around and eating and drinking.

Planning and having food and drinks which your guests will enjoy.

I would suggest solid planning or catering for food so that you're having fun and there are no problems. With food, I have observed two things that work. Having really good tasting food and/or having food that's not a hassle. I have had just as much fun at parties with grilled high end cuts of steak and also catered fried chicken and green beans. You remember good food because it's good and you remember simple food because it's simple and allows everyone to sit back and enjoy each other's company. Do whatever, but avoid anything stressful.

With drinks if it's a drinking crowd, it's about having available what your guests love. Have a good selection of everything. A quick story.. I threw a retirement party once and had a NICE spread of some very good single malt Scotchs. I also set out some really low end stuff which was actually sitting in my cabinet for a long time. The lower priced stuff went just as fast, actually faster. Lesson learned... have on hand what makes your guests feel happy. If you're into nice microbrews but know you'll have guests who are bud light guys.. have some bud on hand.

This will be short and sweet--best party was just a few weeks ago. We felt welcomed, the food was great, the drinks were great, the company was excellent. We talked, we played cards, we laughed, we were with friends!!

graduation party. it was invitation only, plus there was plenty of food and drink. a good DJ and the music was loud. what else does a party need?!

My friend lives in a house boat, so we stayed at this fancy hotel by the beach. We went swimming, ran around, we also got two complaints of noise. We watched TV and did cartwheels. Then, we stayed up til one o'clock eating chocolate and...giggling. in the morning we ate smoothies and bagels.
