we had a scavenger hunt for my grandson in the 4th grade. they had a blast!! We made up a list of 20 strange things to collect. ( blue string, a chicken bone, safety pin, 1 square of blue toilet paper, 1 piece of dog kibble, a wooden matchstick, anything weird, of no particular value and clearly garbage. Then we broke up the group into groups of 2, gave each group a copy of the list and set them loose on the neighborhood. They then go from door to door, asking for something on the list. Rules are, explain you are on a scavenger hunt, only 1 item per house, always say please and thank you, always be polite. It was early evening when we did one party, around 6:30pm. Another time we did the same thing it was in late afternoon, around 4:00pm. We had plenty of adults that sort of helped guide and chaperon the little nippers. We had a great response from the people whose homes were visited. Lots of laughs and even some fond memories for some of the older folks. Apparently this was very popular way back when. With the scavenger hunt, handing out prizes, cake and ice cream, opening gifts, 2 hour party went very quickly.

Most 4th graders do not like dancing, especially not boy-girl dancing. They do generally like to cook - make your own pizza is always popular here. Have a treasure hunt. Drag out the DDR and have a contest. Girls this age enjoy the "beauty parlor" thing - manicures, etc.

My 5th-grade granddaughter & her friends decided last year that they had outgrown the whole "birthday party" gig and have opted for a trip to the bowling alley & make your own pizzas instead

depends what their like.
