One of my Proms was themed "Masquerade". We all made masquerade masks to go with the dresses and the guys wore top hats, and the theme colors were red, black, and silver. It was very 19th century and a total blast.

-or even superheroes(although that's a bit cliche)
ive never really been to a prom but having a fantasy or mythological theme would be pretty cool
How about anevening under the stars? Or a midevil theme? Fire and Ice theme? Trip around the world and have an eiffel tower and the pyramids, etc as decorations. Or just pick one destination, like an evening in Paris or Venice.
we dont have proms in australia and in my mind ive got like big dresses and stuff so im not sure if any of my ideas would work well buuuut, the masquerade idea works really well! ive been to one of those before and i definately recommend that one =) you could also go for a disney theme as well, there are so many choices!

-We did Masquerade, as someone already mentioned, like Phantom of the Opera-style.
-We did a Mardi Gras theme.
-There was also a Vegas-themed one. You know, with gambling paraphernalia. lol

How about "Famous Couples Throughout History". People and their dates could get inspiration for their attire from couples such as:
Adam and Eve
Cinderella & Prince Charming
Barbie and Ken
Bonny & Clyde
Romeo & Juliet
Antony and Cleopatra

mine was a knight and the theme of the prom was
"a knight under the stars" it was a poker/roulette monaco theme..really nice
just make a pun on your mascot or your school colors
