Do you buy a present for someone's 50th birthday party?!

Question: We are invited to my husband's aunt's 50th birthday party. It is a big party at a fire hall where the entire family is invited. What is the protocol on gifts?

A good fine cognac, a good book antique, a gardening set.

Why wouldn't you? Old people like free stuff too.

Yes, unless the family has specified that there should be none or that money be donated to a charity in their name. It doesn't have to be big but you will feel better if you show up with something in your hand. Have Fun!

Present are always nice!!!

I like getting presents so why not?

I buy presents for all birthdays. Fifty year olds love liquor, money, gift cards.
Women love perfume, money, gift cards, spa gift certificates.

Yes, buy her something nice. It's not every day you turn 50 after all!

Yes of course, fifty one dollar bills is a cure idea

well if there related to you or they are friends with you then you should give them a handmade card. they will enjoy that.

I would say play it safe and go in with another family member to buy the gift. Usually the big 50 is gag gifts among friends.

Don't you buy a present for every birthday party that you are invited to ?
Buy whatever you feel is right. For a 50th perhaps moneytary value is best, as by then they would have almost everything else something for the house ?
Personally i like giving out crystal...

It depends on who the person is. I am thinking get her a vase or something like that or even a large indoor plant. You can always ask your husband too and see what he says.

This is a great idea:
Buy a "Life Magazine" from the day she was born or the newspaper from that day. She will LOVE it. Trust me.

I'd get a gift certificate to the nicest restaurant you know of. After 50 years, she probably hasw all the material things she wants or needs. Personally, I know I have too much clutter in the house and don't need more knick-knacks.

50th? Hmmm.... gift certificate for hearing aid store or funeral home. Books: Alzheimer's for REAL Dummies; Recipes for Seniors: Cooking with Alpo; Household items - Depends, A dozen hearing aid batteries; Preparation H; Ben Gay; Vicks Vaporub; tennis balls for walker's legs; Polident/ Poligrip ; AARPP magazine subscription; magnifying glass; a chihuahua; slippers, floral house coat (with large pockets for the chihuahua); a Clapper; clear plastic sofa cover; a home dialysis machine.
I don't know ...go wild and order from Home shopping network

Yes you should by a gift and a card to. Would you like gifts when you turn 50. I would I'd love gift cards to. It doesn't matter if your 6 or 60 it's your birthday.

Something from Bed Bath And Beyond...MAY it be lotion or a beautiful candle. The orange scents are so calming. Get her a gift card! You can also get her a gift card for her favorite place to eat (include a guest dinner)

a gift is always nice but at her age flowers or some jewelery would do fine

Yes

It is ALWAYS better to bring a gift, because if you don't and everyone else does you seem horrid, but if your the only one who does it looks like you care more.

I don't know the protocol. But do you know if she collects anything or has a hobby. There's always the gift certificate and over the hill gag gifts

a present eh....buy a house instead if you have the money but i dont think so...but a gift that has a lot of memories together like let say...arh....park you and ur aunt had a great time there and you took a picture that might make some goood present!
