What do Southern men like to eat for dinner? I am having a guest over & want to thank him for helping me move?!

My husband would ask for chicken fried steak with sausage gravy, mashed potatoes with more gravy, cooked kale in bacon grease, and biscuits for sopping up the gravy. And a pecan pie for dessert.

Meatloaf, Pork chops, or Steak
Potato most any way you want
green beans, they are safe, most men eat them
Homemade bread, biscuits or yeast rolls
Something sweet for dessert.

Fried chicken, red beans and rice with smoked sausage, smothered pork chops and rice,

I don't know about "Southern" men, but here in Texas, we like our B-B-Q, fried chicken, chicken fried steak, fried catfish, pecan pie, Lone Star Beer, anything with four legs that can be cut up to fit on a pit (over mesquite, of course), tater salad, ranch-style beans, cole slaw, corn bread, Lone Star Beer, hushpuppies, chicken gizzards, corn on the cob, fried okra, fried squash, anything that can be fried, pumpkin pie, kolaches, tacos (the real ones, not the fake Taco Bell ones), Lone Star Beer, anything from Dairy Queen, fried taters (the ones cut round), venison, wild hog, red fish, rabbit, squirrel, armadillo, dove, quail, duck, goose, Lone Star Beer, and anything that you don't have to get dressed up for.

Since he is Southern and you aren't (I'm guessing) I wouldn't go with Southern. Southern and Creole has a lot of French influence and isn't the easiest thing to master. Add to it he'll probably be comparing it to his mamma's cooking (can't be avoided), it's a nice thought, but I would go with what you know.

Otherwise, get some good crusty bread and make some gumbo. The kind using filè, not okra. Cobbler with the freshest fruit you can find for dessert.

pig's feet, black i'd'd peas & sum holapino cornbread...dat outa do it. dona forget the koolaid n a jar...anythin else?

ya I would have to say don't go southern...He's visiting you and he's away from home! Vacation baby! Make him feel like he's on one, not back at home. Goto www.Cooks.com, tons of ideas on that site. ie: mixed green Salad, salmon, red potatoes....

Honestly, I would make him one of your favorite dishes. I live in SC and theres a lot of red rice, rice and gravy and fried foods, so why not show your appreciation with your favorite meal, casserole or stew.

Southern men...meat and potatoes! :)
I would say a good steak, and any type of potatoes you like to cook.
Or some fried chicken might be nice.

since im a southerner/cajun from Louisiana i hope i can help you out with some ideas. My fiance LOVES country fried steaks...there sooo good and sooo inexpensive and easy to cook...go on foodnetwork.com and look up paula deens recipe or emerils. I would do that with a chunky mashed potato where you dont mush all the potatoes up with some white country gravy on the steak with a corn on the cob or corn thats already in a can or something. Also you can do a gumbo...either chicken/sausage/okra or shrimp gumbo with file' and both on the side with a potato salad with just boiled eggs, potatoes and mayo!!!! Good luck and i hope you find my advise helpful!

My suggestion: pick up a Paula Deen cookbook. Trust me - everything you need is in there. Williams-Sonoma also has amazing recipes. If you don't feel like buying anything, try this:
Main Course:
Fried Chicken
http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/...

Sides:
Mashed Potatoes
http://www.williams-sonoma.com/recipe/re...
Baked Beans (you can't have too much brown sugar in these, either)
http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/...
Cornbread:
Jiffy Mix makes the best cornbread, and it's EASY
Or - http://www.williams-sonoma.com/recipe/re...

Any other vegetable for a dish is fine.

If you want to go for super easy, find your local Sonny's or barbeque joint, go order a huge meal, and act like you cooked it. :)
