Lunch meats and cheeses and assorted rolls. condiments. Cole slaw, potato salad, pasta salad, Veggie tray and dip, coffee, punch, tea, diet pop, jell-o dishes (at least 2), at least 3 kinds or bars.

another menu is: Wal-mart chicken.... they have very good fried chicken and it is very low priced compared to chicken chains..... and it comes with some sides..... I get the chicken and the cole slaw for all of the sides.... I make my own potato salad, baked beans and veggie tray and dips. Still... have at least 2-3 kinds of bars cut small... a little bigger than a domino, and arranged pretty on platters.

Bake or order a sheet cake for your mother's birthday...

I hope you have help..... I do these type of things a lot.... for something for your mother you could ask several people to bring one or two items..... unless you are renting a hall and having food catered in.

How about some different varieties of quiche, shrimp cocktail, a nice big salad, and cocktails.

I think that you should pick out a fun theme for everyone - such as an island theme or even a costume party where people can dress like the year she was born.

I like the idea of having salad for a nice appetizer and possibly pan roasted chicken with mashed potatoes or some other kind of meal. You could have people bring chips and drinks to enjoy and maybe even have a potluck!

As there will be so many people to feed I'd go for something simple, easy to prepare and serve, and not too many different dishes. This to me means a salad to begin, a meat casserole, a fruit salad after and finish with coffee.
Then it's up to you and your budget as to what you put in those dishes.

Build Your Own Cold Sandwiches:
Sliced ham, turkey, roast beef, cheese
Dinner rolls
Mayo and mustard

2-4 Hot Dishes:
German potato salad
Pizza casserole
Tater tot casserole
Baked beans
Baked corn

1-2 Cold Salads:
Coleslaw
Potato Salad
Tuna Salad
Taco Salad
Waldorf Salad

Ham Roll-Ups
Relish tray (pickles, olives)

1-3 Jello Salads
Pistachio Fluff
Mandarin Orange Jello Salad
Knox Blocks (kids love these)

At least one type of:
Bar
Brownie

And, of course, a nice sheet cake

Serve with soda and/or punch, milk, and coffee

Good luck!

do you know a dish your mother likes perchance? If so I would try to replicate it. Finger foods that are easy to eat are a hit. Little cucumber sandwiches or small chicken salad sandwiches on a croissant would be nice!

Is it safe to assume that you will be serving buffet style? Sounds like you are looking for ideas that are not picinic fare, but also not too casual. This is a special occasion! I would serve things that can be made ahead and set out on the table without worrying if it will stay hot:

*quiche lorraine--baked earlier and served at room temp
*chicken salad in a poppy seed dressing with dried cranberries and pecans, celery, and onion
*parker house rolls
*fresh baby greens salad with grated parmessan cheese
*roasted turkey breast and sliced beef, served at room temp with mayo and mustard
*toasted french bread slices served with a nice purchased olive tamponnade
*wonderful relish tray with dip

Bake and decorate a big sheet cake to serve for dessert and a personal smaller 6-8" cake for your mother so she can blow out candles.

Research buffet table decorating where platters are set about on nice fabric draping at different elevations, put your rolls in linen lined baskets, have flowers included. It makes even simple fare more special.
