Budget First - how much can you spend?
Guest List - how many people can your home comfortably accommodate?
Space planning - do you need extra chairs or tables? - will your party be both in the house and in your backyard - what will the flow of traffic look like? - where will you set up food, the bar and other items like garbage and recycling?
Menu - finger foods - hot or cold? Alcohol? Beer & wine only or will you serve hard liquor? You need to ensure that you provide stuff for the non-drinkers and designated drivers as well. Alcohol and food is where a budget can get blown so make a decision and stick to it.
Clean up - recruit two really good friends to help you stay on top of things during the party - picking up abandoned plates, cups, bottles, etc. If they are really good they will stay the night and help you put the house to rights the next morning and you will take them to brunch to thank them.
PICK A THEME
here are a couple really neat and different themes and ideas that go with them:
1) saphire party-your tell your guests to wear blue(like a common saphire) and then you wear yellow (like a more hard to find saphire) and you can have your guests dress up or just be cassual either way its a great way to make all eyes be on you on your night :)
2) crazy color-this is the theme i am this using for my party go to a party city store and look through all of the fun and bright colors they have for balloons and cups etc. pick a few of them and make the resteraunt bright then make your guests look like they just stepped out of an eighties music video with all their bright colors- and if you dont think they will dress bright make a contest of it by collecting money at the door put it in a jar and give it as a prize to the brightest and most colorfully dressed person at the end of the night
3) mascarade with your invitations hand out a lil mask (you can also find these at party city) tell them to decorate it at home and make it their own and wear it to your party if they dont feel like decorating it thats fine but you need to buy or decorate the prettiest mask so you stand out
4) glow in the dark- buy some black lights and tell your guests to wear a lot of white so they glow! and hand out glow sticks, earings, bracelets, necklaces etc. and have fun with how much white and glow items you wear
