try russums, they've got loads of tableware at really reasonable prices, they have an on-line catalogue with prices.
They sell everything from dish clothes to big kitchen equipment. The hotels use them for crockery because you can get as few or as many as you want, and if you break one you don't have to buy another full set.

I got the Crate & Barrel set (see link below) for my mother last year.

If you have an asian market near you, sushi plates, which are almost always rectangular should do well also.
